The price of the 2016 Mazda CX-9 has been revealed. Four trim levels will be offered on the all-new model, and unusually, the entry-model is more than $1,000 cheaper than the outgoing CX-9 classic.
That rarely happens and Alastair Doak from Mazda Australia is enthusiastic about the value proposition across each of the CX-9 models.
The V6 engine of the old model is out, replaced by a smaller but more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder. The new 2.5-litre petrol makes 170kW of power and 420Nm of torque – and Mazda say it’s all about that low-down torque making the CX-9 very drivable and efficient around town.
Fuel economy is claimed to improve by 25%.
Every grade offers the choice of front-wheel-drive, which returns 8.4L/100km, or a $4,000 upgrade to all-wheel-drive, returning 8.8L/100km.
The CX-9s will also happily run on regular 91RON unleaded – a break from the norm for turbos that usually prefer premium.
An automatic gearbox is standard across the range.
Advanced safety technology will be available across the range, featuring blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and autonomous emergency braking (that also works in reverse).
The range-topping CX-9 Azami ($59,390) brings additional standard fare: active LED headlamps, a driver attention span monitor, and lane keeping assist.
More detailed specifications for each of the grades will be available closer to the CX-9’s Australian launch.
