The 2017 Toyota Prado Altitude special edition has returned to Australian showrooms, promising over $10,000 worth of added equipment over the mid-level Prado GXL on which it’s based. At $68,230 plus on-road costs, the Prado Altitude costs $5,000 more than the Prado GXL turbo-diesel.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the Prado Altitude is remarkable for both its style and value.

“Buyers will appreciate all the new features that make Prado Altitude even more luxurious and practical, including a lighter tailgate that is easier to open – particularly useful in tight city parking,” Mr Cramb said.

Most noticeable is the absence of the rear door-mounted spare tyre, itself relocated to under the boot floor in place of the second fuel tank on other models, but an independently-opening rear glass hatch to aid practicality. This means that the Prado’s fuel capacity is now reduced to 87-litres, though Toyota claims that still more 1,000km is possible per tank, thanks to combined fuel consumption ratings of 8.0L/100km.

Elsewhere, the Prado Altitude sees an electric sunroof, black leather seating with four-way passenger and six-way driver electric seating adjustment, auto-levelling LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, a 14-speaker JBL audio system with DAB+ digital radio, a Blu-ray rear seat entertainment system with a nine-inch monitor.

This is on top of the Prado GXL’s extensive standard equipment list, including seven airbags, hill start assist, hill descent control, tri-zone climate control, a seven-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start and cruise control.

Also carried over from the Prado GXL is the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, producing 128kW of power and 450Nm of torque from just 1,600rpm, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Prado Altitude is available in four different colours – solid black, pearl white, pearl silver and metallic graphite, with the latter three costing an extra $550. Like the usual Prado range, the car’s first six services cost $240 each.
