2017 Volkswagen Golf hatch, wagon prices announced for Australia

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Mark 7.5 lands in Australia in less than two months, with a broad range of hatchback and wagon models complementing updates to the Golf Alltrack, Golf GTI and Golf R models. In the standard-form hatch and wagon, prices rise gently, reflecting added kit. Volkswagen have also dropped 2016’s 92TSI base model – and the entire 92TSI engine – with basic Golfs now powered by the quick 110TSI turbo four.

In fact, the 110TSI petrol, producing 110kW and 250Nm, is now the engine on virtually every mainstream Golf model – a 110TDI diesel option is restricted to expensive Golf Highline models for an extra $2,500. Wagons are a $1,500 upgrade over the hatch, where they are available.

So, what do you get at the various points in the new Golf range?

The standard Golf 110TSI hatch ($23,990 6-speed manual, $26,490 7-speed DSG auto) reflects a $1,150 price increase over the old base model, but it’s 20% more powerful and spec is improved. On the safety front, there’s now city autonomous emergency braking and forward collision warning, fatigue detection, and multi-collision brake, plus 7 airbags and a rear view camera.

The standard 110TSI also gets a leather steering wheel; 8-inch “Composition” infotainment with CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink; 16-inch “Hita” alloys – no more steel wheels on the base Golf – plus LED taillights and LED daytime running lights.

Every Golf – including the base car – also get Volkswagen’s extended electronic front differential lock (XDL), which improves cornering prowess.

From the 110TSI, it’s a $1,000 jump to the Golf 110TSI Trendline ($24,990 hatch 6-speed manual, $27,490 hatch 7-speed DSG auto, $28,990 wagon 7-speed DSG auto). For relatively little outlay the Trendline picks up nice-to-haves like automatic lights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear mirror, front seat lumbar, and a rear centre armrest with through-loading. Trendlines can be picked from their different 16-inch “Toronto” alloys, and black roof rails on the wagon. Prices are up $650 on the old 92TSI Trendline.

The true mid-range Golf – the new Golf 110TSI Comfortline, is $650 more expensive than the old Comfortline (now $28,990 hatch, $30,490 wagon). It’s here that the 7-speed DSG auto becomes standard – as does satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch “Dijon” alloys, upgraded “Comfort” front seats with a storage drawer under the passenger seat, chrome highlights, and chrome roof rails on the wagon.

The premium Golf 110TSI Highline (34,490 hatch, $35,990 wagon) jumps $1,150 from the old car. The engine hasn’t changed here – instead, the extra money adds kit. The Highline now packs black or grey leather seats, which are heated in front and electrically-adjustable for the driver with memory; a panoramic sunroof; LED headlights; front fog lights; keyless entry and go; 17-inch “Karlskoga” alloys; LED ambient lighting inside; and carpet mats.

The Highline is also available as a 110TDI diesel producing 110kW and 340Nm with a 7-speed DSG auto. It’s $2,500 more than the petrol, at $36,990 hatch and $38,490 wagon.

In terms of options, there’s quite a bit of choice.

A Driver Assistance package ($1,500) can be added to the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline grades. This adds active cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automated parking, and driver profiles.

The Infotainment package ($2,300) is available on the Comfortline and Highline, and adds Volkswagen’s Active Info display – a 12” fully digital display replacing the driver’s dials; a 9.2-inch “Discover Pro” infotainment screen with gesture and voice control, and a 400-watt Dynaudio Excite premium stereo with 10-channel amplifier and subwoofer.

Highline models can be spruced up with the R-line package ($2,500), which adds sporty exterior and interior styling, 18-inch “Sebring” alloys, progressive steering ratio, sports suspension, dark tinted rear and rear side glass.
