Volkswagen Australia has announced initial specifications for its first seven-seat SUV, the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. Using the same drivetrains and trim levels as the regular Tiguan, the Allspace variant also offers a longer body than the regular Tiguan, with even more interior space as a result. Crucially, this has allowed the Allspace to be equipped with seven seats as standard, giving Volkswagen Australia space in the seven-seat segment.
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is confirmed for Australian sales in July 2018, with local pricing to be confirmed before then – we’d expect a reasonable premium over five-seat Tiguan models, especially with the added equipment the Allspace earns.
Measuring in at 4,701mm long, the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is a massive 215mm longer than the regular Tiguan. Its rear overhang is 106mm longer than the five-seat Tiguan, and up to 230-litres of bootspace is available with the third row of seats erected – though its platform mate, the Skoda Kodiaq, features 270-litres in the same situation. Fold the third row down and you get up to 700-litres of space – 545 more than the five-seat model, and with all five rear seats folded, up to 1,920-litres is available. When it goes on sale, the Tiguan Allspace will compete with high end seven-seat variants of the Honda CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail ranges.
The cabin of the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace remains unchanged from the regular five-seat model, however. A range of upholsteries will be available, with black cloth featuring on the Comfortline, black or half beige/black ‘Vienna’ leather, whilst the R-Line Package adds black leather with R-Line logos onto sports front seats.
Featuring the same available drivetrains as the five-seat Tiguan, the Allspace will be offered in five total models spanning the Comfortline and Highline grades, though a price leading Trendline model will not be available. The Comfortline will offer three engines – a front-wheel drive 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbo petrol with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic, and an all-wheel drive 132kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol or 110kW/340Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel, both matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The Comfortline grade is equipped better than in the five-seat Tiguan, with autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane assist, automatic parallel and perpendicular parking, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with inbuilt satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, automatic headlights and wipers, cornering LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic-folding mirrors, front and rear foglamps, silver-painted mirrors, tri-zone climate control and a rechargeable torch in the cargo area.
Above the Comfortline sits the Highline, which is all-wheel drive only and is available with a 162kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol or a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbo diesel – both are matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Highline grade is well equipped, with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear traffic alert, adaptive lane guidance, adaptive dampers with different driving modes, adaptive LED headlights that blocks out portions of the beam to not blind oncoming traffic, 19-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery with electrically adjustable front seats, heated front and middle seats, a larger 9.2-inch infotainment system, interior ambient lighting and ‘premium’ LED tailights.
Option packages will be available for both Comfortline and Highline models, including a Driver Assistance Package for the Comfortline with dynamic light assist, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert. The Comfortline can also be optioned with the Luxury Package, which includes leather upholstery, a panoramic glass sunroof and electrically adjustable and heated front seats.
Both the Comfortline and Highline can be optioned with a Sound and Vision Package, which includes Volkswagen’s Active Info Display digital dials, as well as a Dynaudio sound system (the first time a premium sound system has been offered in the Tiguan) and a 360-degree parking camera. Finally, an R-Line Package is available for Highline models, which includes a many sporty details such as a bodykit, sports seats, 20-inch alloy wheels and lots of R-Line badging.
Local range pricing, as well as option package pricing and other figures such as fuel economy is due to be announced before the Tiguan Allspace’s local launch in July, though one would expect a reasonable premium over five-seat Tiguan models. Another curious aspect to the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is how much extra standard equipment it adds over the standard Tiguan, including equipment that has remained unavailable such as the Dynaudio sound system – will the standard Tiguan earn the same equipment levels? We hope so.
