Only recently updated for 2019, the BMW X2 range has been further bolstered by a new M35i performance variant. Priced from $68,900 plus on-road costs, the 2019 BMW X2 M35i will land locally early in 2019.
Powered by a 225kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, the X2 M35i gives the X2 the performance to match its slinky styling. The M35i also earns more standard equipment than the rest of the X2 range, and a whole host of performance upgrades as well.
“The combination of M Performance exterior details and the M Sport dynamic enhancements heightens the sporting aesthetic and thrilling driving experience of the X2,” said Vikram Pawah, CEO of BMW Group Australia.
“The M35i delivers style, performance, versatility, and comfort at an accessible price point,” he said.
Centrepiece of the M35i transformation to the X2 is its engine. Instead of using the lesser X2 sDrive18i’s 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol or the sDrive’s 2.0-litre turbo, the M35i uses a 225kW and 450Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. It’s the first four-cylinder M car since the iconic E30 M3, and is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission equipped with launch control, which allows the X2 M35i to sprint to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds.
In addition to the 2019 BMW X2 M35i’s performance, many other aspects of its driving experience have been tuned. New M Sport suspension has been developed for the M35i, while M Sport brakes are now standard equipment to match the 35i’s extra performance. The xDrive all-wheel drive system is equipped with an M Sport differential, and a mechanical limited-slip differential at the front to enhance cornering. More precise M Sport steering is also standard for enhanced driving feel.
The 2019 BMW X2 M35i is priced from $68,900 plus on-road costs, and includes more equipment than lesser X2 models. M Sport seats with integrated headrests with Dakota leather upholstery are standard, as is an anthracite headliner. Keyless entry and start is also included, as is electric front seat functionality with memory settings and electric lumbar support and heating, a 360 watt 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, M Sport brakes, 20-inch alloy wheels, aluminium interior trimmings, mirror caps, exhaust tips and grille surroundings in Cerium Grey, auto-dimming exterior mirrors and door sill finishes with M35i badging.
That’s on top of the regular X2 range’s equipment, which includes an 8.8-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay, a colour heads-up display, LED headlights, cruise control with braking functionality, dual-zone climate control and front and rear parking sensors. BMW Australia is also offering a new $2,900 Enhance Package for the M35i, which bundles metallic paint, a panoramic glass sunroof and wireless phone charging.
