2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class reaches Australia

Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific has launched the fourth-generation A-Class in Australia. Priced from $47,200 plus on-road costs, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is only available in A200 specification for now, but a higher-powered and better equipped A250, hi-po AMG versions and even a sedan bodystyle will join the range in 2019.

Now based on a new platform, the new A-Class is larger in all key dimensions than the outgoing model and includes significantly more standard equipment including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive LED headlights and MBUX, which is Mercedes’ new infotainment system with two 10.25-inch screens. The new A-Class goes on sale today.

According to Mercedes, the new A-Class is “as youthful and dynamic as ever, but grown-up and comfortable like never before. It completely redefines modern luxury in the compact class, and revolutionises interior design.”

“Technologically the new A-Class not only takes first place thanks to MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience: it also offers a number of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class.”

Measuring 4,419mm long, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a full 120mm longer than its predecessor – aiding interior space significantly. But length is not the only area where the A-Class has grown as it’s also 16mm wider at 1,796mm, 6mm taller at 1,440mm and its 2,729mm wheelbase is 30mm longer than before. But despite growing, it also weighs less – 1,375kg plays 1,395kg. Bootspace has also grown by 29-litres to 370-litres – competitive against the Volvo V40, Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.

For now, just a single petrol engine variant is available in Australia, called the A200. It’s now powered by a new 1.33-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 120kW of power and 250Nm. Matched solely to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, combined fuel consumption is rated as 5.7L/100km and CO2 emissions are rated as 130g/km through the new WLTP standard. A more powerful A250 as well as faster AMG versions are due to join the Australian range in 2019.

Pricing for the A200 has been increased by $2,900 compared with the previous A200, but standard equipment has grown considerably. Standard equipment on the A200 now includes 18-inch alloy wheels, sports seats with Mercedes’ man-made Artico leather, automatic LED headlights with adaptive high beam assist, wireless phone charging, two 10.25-inch digital displays with inbuilt satellite navigation and the new MBUX operating system with features natural speech recognition, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as autonomous emergency braking, automatic parking, blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert, a reversing camera and traffic sign assist.

A number of optional packages also exist for customers to make their 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class more special, ranging from the $1,990 Night Package to the limited run $7,090 Edition 1 Package. A range of features is added by the available packages including dual-zone climate control with rear air vents, larger alloy wheels, adaptive dampers with independent rear suspension, a range of leather upholstery options, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, electric front seats with memory functionality, a 590W Burmeister 12-speaker sound system, a heads-up display, different trim inlays, 64-colour ambient lighting and a Nappa leather 3-spoke steering wheel.
