Ssangyong Korando E-Motion 2022: Australian release possible for Korean electric SUV

Originally revealed in June, the Korando E-Motion is the first electric vehicle from the South Korean car maker Ssangyong. 

With a relatively modest 339km driving range (WLTP), the E-Motion is powered by a single electric motor which produces 140kW of power and 360Nm of torque and sends it exclusively to the front wheels. 

Power comes from a 61.5kWh battery which is packaged neatly under the floor – like the majority of electric cars on the market today. 

The Korando E-Motion will initially be offered in overseas markets such as Spain, where it will go on sale for the equivalent value of AUD$56,000 – which is not far off the price of the upcoming Volkswagen ID.4 – but the Korando promises higher specification for less money. 

Standard specification for the Korando E-Motion includes LED head and tail lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone charging, a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital driving cluster and dual-zone climate control. 

Several safety features are included with the vehicle such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, driver fatigue detection and AEB with pedestrian detection. 

Charging the E-Motion should take around 11 hours on a standard home wall-box, but on a fast charger that time can be cut down to around one hour – meaning peak charging speeds of around 100kW. 

The Ssangyong Korando E-Motion will also go on sale in the UK in January 2022, so we will have to wait and see whether the E-Motion has a place in the market here in Australia.
