2017 Mazda 2 pricing and specifications

The 2017 Mazda 2 range has arrived in Australia, bringing a significant boost in value with small but important additions to the local light car range. Pricing has remained unchanged, but Mazda Australia claims that an extra $1,000 value has been added to each model.

Headlining changes to the range is new standard equipment, including previously-optional Autonomous Emergency Braking across the range. This means that the Mazda 2 is among the safest in the light car segment.

The mid-spec Maxx adds to this with AEB in reverse – incredibly handy if children or unseen objects are behind the car when reversing – and Genki and top-spec GT also add blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alert, all of which are unavailable in any other car in the light car field.

The 2017 Mazda 2 comes at a crucial time for light cars, which have declined almost 20% year-on-year, a result of booming SUV sales in Australia. Despite Australians flocking to SUVs at a record rate, Mazda Australia Managing Director Vinesh Bhindi isn’t too concerned for his passenger car sales. “While SUV sales are growing at a record rate, you cannot lose sight of passenger cars” he said.

“The Mazda 2, 3 and 6 make up the majority of our passenger car sales. 17.6% of the passenger car segment in sales are Mazdas”

The Mazda 2 remains the second-highest selling light car in Australia with 3,097 sales so far in 2017 and 16.4% market share, just behind the Hyundai Accent. Taking purely private sales into account however, the Mazda2 is the number one seller in the segment.

Mazda Australia are hoping that the 2017 Mazda 2 update brings more popularity to the range with new equipment that was previously unavailable on the car. The whole range earns Automatic Emergency Braking, electric-folding mirrors and Mazda’s G-Vectoring electronic chassis assistance as standard equipment.

The mid-spec Maxx also earns AEB in reverse and a DAB+ digital radio whilst the Genki earns auto-folding mirrors, a colour heads-up display on top of the dashboard, blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alert. At the top of the range, the new GT spec replaces the Genki S-Pack and adds white leather/black cloth with red highlights (hatch) or black leather/black suede with bronze highlights (sedan). The GT is also available in the sedan bodyshape, bringing higher specs to the sedan for the first time in the local Mazda 2’s history.

Mechanically the 2017 Mazda 2 remains largely unchanged, but Mazda have also revised the colours and trims available for the 2017 Mazda2, removing Gunmetal Blue, Metropolitan Grey, Black and Smokey Rose and replacing them with Eternal Blue, Meteor Grey, Jet Black and Deep Crimson respectively.

The range also sees revised interior trims, a slim new steering wheel borrowed from the Mazda 3, revised speedometer fonts, rear heater ducts under the front seats and more sound insulation added under the boot to lower road noise levels.
