Volvo Cars Australia has announced pricing for the 2018 Volvo XC40 ahead of the car’s local launch this month. Priced from $47,990 plus on-road costs, the XC40 is priced to compete with cars such as the BMW X2, as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Jaguar E-Pace.
Offered with two main specification points and two engines in Australia, Volvo is also releasing two Launch Editions with up to a claimed $5,000 extra value. Two engines are available for now – the T5 petrol and D4 diesel, both turbocharged four-cylinder units. The 2018 Volvo XC40 is in Volvo dealerships now.
Nick Connor, Managing Director of Volvo Car Australia, said: “SUVs continue to be very popular with Australian car buyers, and the compact SUV segment is also growing rapidly. In such a competitive market you need to stand out from the crowd.” We are confident that with its very distinctive look and competitive pricing the XC40 will make an immediate impact with buyers who are looking for something very different from the cookie-cutter models in the compact luxury SUV segment today.”
“The XC40 exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology. These technologies will make the XC40 one of the best equipped compact luxury SUVs on the Australian market.”
In Australia for the time being, the 2018 Volvo XC40 will be available with two different engines – a 185kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and a 140kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, both with eight-speed automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive as standard. A 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol is tipped to join the range at some point in the future, and the XC40 is the first Volvo to ride on the company’s new Compact Modular Architecture platform that will underpin future small Volvo products. Dimensionally, the XC40 is shorter than competitors, though wider and taller, and offers 460-litres of bootspace.
The 2018 will be offered in two main specifications in Australia – Momentum and R-Design. Standard equipment on both is extensive, with 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights with automatic high beam, a 12.3-inch driver’s information display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, wireless phone charging, half cloth/vinyl upholstery, an electric driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment, as well as autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert, lane departure warning and keyless entry and start.
Stepping up to the R-Design adds a whole heap of sporty details including 20-inch alloy wheels, bumpers, seats, a three-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters as well as an electric tailgate and electric adjustment for the front passenger seat.
Volvo Australia is also offering two limited edition XC40 models at the car’s launch based on each model in the lineup. The Momentum Launch Edition adds a panoramic sunroof, active LED lights, adaptive cruise control, a Harman Kardon sound system, tinted windows, heated front seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, a 360-degree parking camera, automatic parking, an electric tailgate, an electric passenger seat, leather upholstery and an alarm.
The R-Design Launch Edition adds a panoramic sunroof, tinted windows, an alarm, adaptive cruise control, automatic parking, a 360-degree parking camera and a Harman Kardon stereo. According to Volvo, the Momentum Launch Edition adds over $10,000 in extra features for only $5,000 more money, whilst the R-Design Launch Edition only costs $2,000 more than the R-Design, yet adds over $6,000 in extra equipment.
The 2018 Volvo XC40 is bound to give Volvo Cars Australia a much-needed shot in the arm for sales. The XC40 was named the 2018 World Car of the Year, and carries a more youthful appearance that Volvo Cars Australia is hoping will entice more customers into its showroom. Volvo’s start to 2018 has been promising, with an increase in sales by 10.1 percent thus far to 1,306 sales with new models such as the new XC60, new V60 and a less expensive variant of the XC40 promising to boost sales further.
