There aren’t many of them, but wagon-based crossovers are among the most practical vehicles on the road. The Volvo XC70 Cross Country was the original example, joined by the Audi A6 Allroad in the late 1990s.
For the past couple of years, Audi has quietly offered the smaller A4 Allroad wagon in small numbers in Australia. Available exclusively as an estate (although a sedan is optional in Europe) with a two-litre diesel engine, the smaller Allroad has received a number of subtle updates for 2015.
Though it’s based on the ageing A4 platform, which is starting to date – especially in the cabin – we still rate the A4 Allroad as a really interesting, niche option for durable family transport.
For 2015, the Audi makes use of a new 2.0 TDI diesel motor producing 140kW (+10kW) and 400Nm (+20Nm). Consumption remains steady at 5.6L / 100km – the point of the new engine is to bring it up to EU6 emissions standards, while offering a pleasant boost in performance numbers
The motor remains paired exclusively to Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system and a seven-sped double-clutch automatic.
There’s just one model in the range and standard equipment is generous – navigation, leather, three-zone climate control and a ten-speaker audio system are all inclusions. A $3,000 Comfort option pack is now available, which adds heated memory seats, an electric tailgate and larger wheels to the mix – features we’d opt for.
