How much can your SUV tow? We list the towing capacities of every SUV and 4WD sold on the Australian market
Many buyers considering a new SUV have plans to tow. Whether it’s a small trailer to help take unwanted items to the tip once a year or a brand new boat or caravan, one of the key selling features of a crossover or 4WD is the ability to haul something behind it.
Manufacturers in Australia can choose to have the towing capacity of their vehicle certified, or they can opt to not have the car rated for towing at all. The latter is rare, as you’ll see in our list below.
In order to be legal, it’s important to respect the gross combination mass of the vehicle and to not tow more than the braked towing capacity allows for.
We’ve compiled a helpful list of all new SUVs and 4WD wagons on sale in Australia in 2022. Sorted by manufacturer, in A-Z form, you’ll find the towing capacity of every SUV on the market here.
But first, let’s review a few highlights:
If you’re looking for the maximum towing capacity on any SUV, you’ll need a vehicle rated to tow 3500kg braked. Here’s our handy list of all 20 new SUVs and 4WDs currently rated to tow 3.5 tonnes.
More and more fully-electric SUVs are being rated for towing capacity – this used to be rare. The new BMW iX may not be to everybody’s visual tastes, but it can tow up to 2500kg, while the Audi E-tron range can haul 1800kg.
The popular Hyundai Ioniq 5 can tow 1600kg, while the Volvo XC40 Pure Electric can haul 1500kg. The BMW iX3 and Kia Niro Electric can handle 750kg and 300kg respectively.
Meanwhile, the Hyundai Kona Electric, Jaguar I-Pace, Lexus UX 300e, Mazda MX-30 E35, Mercedes-Benz EQA and Mercedes-Benz EQC remained unrated for towing.
Italian luxury brand Alfa Romeo sells just one SUV globally – the Stelvio midsize crossover. It’s rated for two-tonne towing in four-cylinder guise, but the hot 2.9-litre Quadrifoglio model is not rated for towing.
