Ambitious Chinese manufacturer had been expected to assume full control of local operations, taking over from importer EV Direct
BYD Australia has assumed its full official set-up in Australia, with original importer EV Direct confirming expectations that it would hand over national distribution of popular models such as the Shark 6 plug-in ute and Atto 3 compact electric SUV.
EV Direct announced today that the distributorship transfer was set for July, claiming the move was “a year ahead of schedule”.
The local importer introduced the Build Your Dreams (BYD) brand to Australia in 2022, and has overseen more than 50,000 BYD new-car registrations since.
BYD registrations have had a strong start to 2025 – up 103 percent year on year and boosted by more than 6000 sales of Australia’s first plug-in hybrid ute, the Shark 6.
EV Direct says it will now focus on becoming BYD’s leading distributor in Australia in a partnership with Eagers Automotive called EV Dealer Group.
“As the inaugural importer, EVDirect is extremely proud of the role it has played in the launch of BYD into the Australian market, overseeing what has been one of the most successful new car brand launches in Australian history,” said Luke Todd, founder of EV Direct and forthcoming executive chairman of the EV Dealer Group (EVDG).
“As a team we are extremely proud of what’s been achieved and even more excited by the future as our team repositions into a new role that will help catapult the BYD brand further, right across Australia.”
EVDG said it intends to become BYD’s largest sales and service channel, expanding with “new and innovative retail formats”, shortening wait times for new vehicles, and improving after-sales support.
Todd has previously made bold statements about BYD’s sales ambitions in Australia, saying it believed it could displace Toyota as the country’s most popular brand as early as 2027.
BYD had been expected to confirm its official control of the brand in Australia after recently confirming it would take full responsibility for bringing the company’s Denza luxury sub-brand here.
Chasing Cars is currently in China on a BYD media tour, and will soon be bringing more news and reviews relating to the brand’s future in Australia.
