The 2022 survey out of the United States showed that Korean brands such as Hyundai and Kia were the most dependable
Kia’s related trio of car manufacturers Kia, Genesis and Hyundai took a clean sweep in the 2022 JD Power vehicle dependability survey out of the United States.
The study looks at which makes and models are most reliable, with the smallest proportion of vehicles developing problems after owners take delivery.
US automaker Buick made the top five, as did Japanese giant Toyota.
The most dependable model for the second year in a row was the Porsche 911 sports car which was the highest ranked model in the entire study.
The most dependable brand of all was Kia – maker of the popular Sorento, Sportage and Seltos SUVs – which ranked highest out of all brands tested.
Toyota Motor Corporation earned itself five model awards for the Lexus NX, Lexus RX, Lexus UX, Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Tundra.
Hyundai received two segment awards for the Santa Fe and Sonata models.
J.D Power examined cars from the 2019 model year for this study which is now in its 33rd year.
The brand with the most problems was Land Rover with US truck specialist Ram, Swedish maker Volvo and Italian brand Alfa Romeo falling at the bottom of the reliability list.
Another major issue found during the study was significant problems with infotainment systems and software.
Seven of the top-10 problem areas were infotainment related and these included voice recognition, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay connectivity, Bluetooth, navigation systems which were difficult to use or understand and issues with the touchscreen/display itself.
There was also an issue with there not being enough USB charging ports in a wide range of cars at different price points.
One of the first key findings was that owners of mass market vehicles experienced fewer problems when compared to owners who purchased cars from premium brands.
J.D Power said that one of the issues with premium vehicles is that more technology is implemented into these vehicles, making them more prone to failure over time.
J.D Power also said that the build quality of mass market vehicles has improved considerably and now matches that of premium brands across a range of segments.
