The new Toyota Prado has got off to a flying sales start with a record month for the nameplate
The new Toyota Prado has got off to a flying sales start with a record month for the nameplate, and a first-ever top-3 placing in November.
Toyota registered 3590 Prado sales last month, according to latest official industry data, beating the previous best of 3090 units the large 4WD recorded in November 2023.
Prado was the fifth most popular model in Australia then but last month the new-generation model was outsold only by its midsized SUV stablemate, the Toyota RAV4 (5526 registrations) and the Ford Ranger (5181 units).
The one unknown is Tesla sales, as the US electric brand has stopped reporting registrations in protest at what it believes were “false” claims being made by industry body the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries about the impact of new-car emissions on new-car prices.
Tesla’s Model Y electric SUV was one of the models to outsell the Prado in November 2023.
Ford’s rival to the Prado, the Everest, also had a strong month, with 2737 registrations.
Lexus’s upmarket relative to the Prado, the GX, recorded 173 sales last month.
Prado sales made little difference to Toyota’s market dominance in November. With 20,562 registrations, its nearest challenger was Ford – which again displaced Mazda from its usual second place but was still short of the No.1 spot with 8720 sales. Mazda was third last month with 7588 registrations.
