Just 35 Borns remain available from the initial local allocation of 400 but more are on the way
Cupra Australia has confirmed that an extra allocation of 200 Borns have been made available for Australian customers to order online.
The all-electric Born hot hatch can be ordered through Cupra Australia’s website, with these deliveries set to start from later in 2023.
News of this new local allocation comes alongside the announcement stating that just 35 of the original 400 Borns made available in Australia are still on offer. Deliveries from this initial allocation are set to kick off in April.
Once in Australia, the Born will sit in somewhat of a niche segment, being a small electric hot hatch, though it will still compete primarily with the Tesla Model 3 sedan and Polestar 2 liftback.
However it’s hot hatch designation, combined with its keen price tag of $59,990 before on-road costs could also see it cross-shopped against traditional offerings like the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Hyundai i30N, and Cupra Leon VZx.
Speaking on this fresh allocation of Born units, Cupra Head of Product and Planning Jeff Shafer noted that the brand’s headquarters was following through on its promise to prioritise the Australian market.
“Initially it was CUPRA’s intention to cap pre-delivery orders at 400, but such has been the response that a further 200 Borns have allotted to Australia in the short term,” Shafer said.
“We won’t at this stage estimate a total for 2023 Born sales, but there’s no doubt that this early reaction bodes well.”
Shafer also noted that while the first PHEV allocations for both the Formentor and Leon have been exhausted, Cupra Australia will soon be in a position to announce more.
Thanks to a single electric motor situated on the rear axle which produces 170kW/310Nm, the Born is able to hit 100km/h from a standing start in seven seconds.
A 77kWh (usable) battery allows for a maximum driving range of 511km, according to the WLTP testing cycle.
It can charge at speeds up to 170kW when using a DC charger, or 11kW when using a home-style AC charger.
Cupra Australia has also expressed interest in bringing 58kWh-equipped Born into the market. With the smaller battery, this Born would be cheaper, lighter, and faster.
