MG4 has announced an even cheaper variant of the rear-wheel drive MG4, but it’s not quite as cheap as BYD’s new Dolphin electric small car
MG has announced an even cheaper, price-leading version of its MG4 electric hatchback called the Excite 51 – and it will be coming to Australia priced at $38,990 before on-road costs.
That price makes it Australia’s second-cheapest new EV as of today. The MG4 Excite 51 held the mantle of the most affordable EV on sale locally for two days, but it was rapidly displaced by the similarly-sized BYD Dolphin.
As a key replacement for the entry-level MG ZS EV Excite, which was simultaneously dropped from MG’s lineup, the first on the ladder for the MG4 family tree will be powered by a 51kWh battery pack and a single, rear-mounted electric motor.
The Excite 51 will have an expected electric range of 350km (WLTP). The 64kWh battery offers 435km range (WLTP) while the longest-range version with a 77kWh battery has 530km (WLTP).
For buyers after a bigger battery and greater range, larger battery packs with the capacity of 64kWh and 77kWh are available.
Although MG initially had the status of having the cheapest new EV in Australia, BYD has since come in with an ever-so-slightly sharper price for the Dolphin – just $100 cheaper than the base MG4 at $38,890 before on-road costs.
First deliveries of the MG4 are expected in August 2023.
As standard, the Excite 51 will include the following features as standard:
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
