The Queensland Government will be one of the first to offer a $6000 rebate when an electric vehicle is purchased
The state government of Queensland has today announced it will make the sale of EVs in the state cheaper than before by doubling the value of the current rebate.
At the moment, EV buyers can apply for a $3000 rebate up to an eligibility threshold of $58,000.
However, the Queensland government will double this rebate to $6000 if the electric vehicle’s price falls below $68,000 and the total gross household income is under $180,000.
The vehicle’s purchase price will now be changed to exclude dealer delivery fees.
Several electric cars will fall within the pricing eligibility criteria needed to qualify for the rebate in Queensland.
The Tesla Model 3 in rear-drive guise ($60,900), the Polestar 2 standard range ($63,900), both variants of the Nissan Leaf (starting from $50,990) and the Mini electric hatch (from $55,650) are some of the models that fall within the threshold.
This does however mean that the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5, the freshly-released Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Volvo XC40 Recharge are all ineligible for the rebate.
Queensland is likely to be the first state in Australia to enact changes to its electric vehicle rebate program since the announcement of Australia’s first EV strategy.
Most states in Australia currently offer a $3000 rebate for electric vehicle purchases. This is the case for New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, however Western Australia currently offers a $3500 rebate.
