Towing kit now available for fitment from Tesla’s Australian service centres, to tap into electric SUV’s 1600kg braked towing capacity
EV manufacturer Tesla is from today notifying Model Y owners in Australia that installations of the SUV’s towing package are now possible in Australia at a cost of $1970.
Tesla said that Australian customers had been able to join a waitlist for towing kit installation from July of 2022, and that it has taken until January 2023 for the brand to receive supplies of the kit.
“We have started to receive stock of the Model Y tow package,” customer communications from Tesla reads. “We are now accepting bookings for service centre installation, based on the date which owners registered their interest.”
The Model Y is a midsize, fully-electric SUV. In Australia, the Model Y is approved for a brake towing capacity of 1600 kg with a maximum tow ball download of 160 kg.
That capacity is equal to the 1600 kg rating for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and a little greater than the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD’s 1500 kg – however, the more expensive and larger BMW iX is rated to tow 2500 kg in Australia.
In the United States, the Model Y is rated to tow 3500 lbs (1587 kg), which falls marginally short of the Australian towing capacity.
Customers who joined the Model Y’s towing package waitlist are being given priority booking space.
