First tipped for a 2023 launch, the electric SUV pairing will now likely land in the first half of 2024
Volkswagen’s all-electric ID4 and ID5 SUV pairing has been confirmed to launch in 2024, which is later than what the brand’s local arm was hoping for.
As previously reported by Chasing Cars, Volkswagen Australia was working overtime in order to get the SUVs here by the second half of 2023, but this will not be the case anymore.
When the ID4 and ID5 do land in 2024, it’s likely that they will face competition from the likes of the Toyota BZ4X, the Subaru Solterra and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The ID4 and ID5 are among five new electric vehicles that Volkswagen Australia has confirmed for its local production allocation by 2025. This includes the ID3 electric hatch, the ID Buzz people mover and the ID Buzz Cargo.
Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles director Michal Szaniecki was confident in the brand’s electric lineup when speaking about this new pairing.
“We can confirm the ID3, ID4 and ID5 will both start production and go on sale next year, so our message for customers thinking about switching to a BEV is this – we’re here in 2024, and here in a big way,” he said.
Though local pricing and specification is yet to be revealed, Volkswagen Australia has previously indicated that the Tiguan 162TSI R-Line (at $58,890 plus on-road costs) can be used as a benchmark for the ID4.
The same goes for powertrain details, with Volkswagen Australia is prioritising the largest globally-available battery for the ID4 and ID5 locally.
With 77kWh of usable capacity, this pack provides 520km range (WLTP). The cars are rear-wheel drive, with a single motor producing 150kW/310Nm. Performance grades with AWD will follow later.
Alongside confirming that the SUVS will be landing in 2024, Volkswagen Australia has confirmed that all its dealerships will be selling and servicing its entire BEV range from the get go.
