Alfa Romeo is set to have a five-model fully-electric lineup by 2027 that could include a new large SUV
Italian automaker Alfa Romeo has given us a clearer picture of what to expect from its lineup in the coming years.
In 2027, Alfa Romeo will become a brand that offers only zero-emission electric vehicles, but what does the path look like to get there?
Alfa Romeo’s head of product Daniel Guzzafame told Chasing Cars that the lineup of vehicles going forward would include the current Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV nameplates, but more is to come.
Guzzafame confirmed that in 2024, there will be a new Alfa model launched that will be designed for both battery electric and internal-combustion powertrains. This will not be an electrified version of an existing model, such as the Giulia or Stelvio.
In 2025, Alfa Romeo will launch another model, this time its “first BEV-only model,” a dedicated electric vehicle. This model is likely to adopt an entirely new name and could potentially sit on a new platform shared across a wider Stellantis architecture.
By 2027, Alfa has pledged to offer a fully electric emission-free lineup comprising five models: Giulia, Stelvio, Tonale and two mysterious others – to compete with other premium brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
Guzzafame added that in order to be relevant, “you need three, four, five silhouettes (body styles) to be in 90 percent of the profit pool”.
“The volume seller is the C (small segment). The first profit is the D (mid-size segment) and the first that is non-profitable but relevant is the E (large segment)”.
Without confirming anything, Guzzafame mentioned that “something bigger” could be coming, potentially a large EV SUV to sit above what will be a new-generation electric Stelvio.
Guzzafame also hinted that the final, fifth model of Alfa Romeo’s all-electric 2027 renaissance could well be “a C-segment hatch or hatch-SUV (crossover)”.
Alfa Romeo’s completely refreshed 2027 EV will sit on variations of the Stellantis STLA modular electric architecture, rather than the internal-combustion-based underpinnings of the current three-strong lineup.
This means that the new Tonale, due to launch in Australia early next year, will effectively survive a short five-year lifecycle and will be replaced by an all-new version, for 2027 release, that Guzzafame has confirmed is already in the works.
