Every important car news story breaking today, in one convenient read
Thanks for joining us this Friday 15 November 2024. Notably in car news today: Chery’s sub-brand, Jetour, wants to boost exports to 1.1 million by 2030, and Jaguar has released official imagery of a prototype version of its upcoming four-door electric GT car.
Chinese brand Jetour boldly envisions one million cars exported by 2030
Jetour, a sub-brand of Chinese automaker Chery, has some bold plans for the future, predicting it will be able to export over one million vehicles by 2030.
According to Automotive News China, Jetour wants to expand its exports 10 times over what it managed to achieve in 2023.
Jetour is a young brand, having only been established in 2018. It’s confirmed for launch in Australia and focuses predominantly in the SUV space with models such as Dashing, Traveller and X70.
In 2023, Jetour’s parent company, Chery Automobile Company, produced 1.8 million vehicles, making it the fifth-largest manufacturer of cars in China behind the likes of SAIC, FAW, Dongfeng, Changan and BYD.
In 2023, China produced a staggering 30.1 million cars, with that number almost certain to grow year-on-year.
Jaguar teases prototype of new four-door electric GT car
British automaker Jaguar has teased images of its upcoming electric four-door GT prototype, showing us for the first time the boxy front end design – which is arguably very un-Jaguar.
With a very similar front-end design to cars such as the Chrysler 300 and with the body similar to that of a Porsche Taycan, the yet-unnamed model will be the beginnings of Jaguar’s reinvention as an electric brand.
It’s unclear just yet what electric powertrain the new model will use, or specific outputs, but expect them to exceed that of the outgoing Jaguar F-Type, which produced as much as 423kW in supercharged V8 SVR guise.
Expect to hear more about the future Jaguar model on 2 December, when the concept is unveiled at Miami Art Week.
President-elect Donald Trump enlists Elon Musk as efficiency advisor
United States president elect Donald Trump has enlisted Tesla CEOElon Musk to run a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
According to reports from Reuters, Trump and Musk plan to “pave the way to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulation, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure federal agencies”.
But Reuters has today also reported that a change in government and support from Donald Trump could have a positive impact on Elon Musk’s Tesla Robotaxi program.
Due to diverse driverless vehicle rules in the USA, Musk has openly said in a recent earnings call that implementing driverless car networks is “incredibly painful to do state by state”.
Musk has pushed back a truly affordable Tesla electric car to commit to a Robotaxi program, but it could be years before the project even lifts off.
Renault pushing for Blade Runner-esque interiors with new ‘Embleme’ concept vehicle
Renault has announced a new concept vehicle which seems leagues ahead of its current model lineup in terms of cabin design.
The Embleme features a full-cabin-width screen that integrates not only the driver’s instrument cluster, but a wide screen for the front passenger, too.
A separate screen, likely for HVAC/ climate controls and most of the infotainment functions, sits front and centre, but below the ultra-wide screen.
But the Embleme concept also revolves around recycled materials and the entire lifecycle of the vehicle, including eco-design, choice of resources, manufacture, use and end-of-life stages.
Artificial intelligence will also play a part, along with ease-of-use widgets, simple touchscreen interfaces, voice control and a large volume control knob. Actual screen dimensions have not been disclosed.
Expect to see some of these new technology features to be present in future Renault models.
2025 Genesis GV70 reviewed
Chasing Cars journalist Zak Adkins’ video review of the 2025 Genesis GV70 Signature Sport was published, including his thoughts on the freshly facelifted Korean luxury SUV lineup.
In terms of positives, Zak thought the GV70 was a polished and very comfortable package, had a very quiet driving experience and muscular, smooth V6 power in flagship Signature Sport guise.
However, annoying active safety technologies, a pricier asking price and a thirsty V6 engine were some of the downsides Zak noted.
In summary, Zak stated that “annoying safety alert aside, this is a luxury SUV you should be strongly considering [adding that] Genesis is somewhat of an underrated, underdog kind of brand”.
