Terramar medium-sized SUV joins the Cupra family with Australian arrival chalked for mid 2025

Cupra has unveiled its all-new Terramar SUV in Barcelona, taking its growing sports model family to six, ahead of an Australian arrival date in the third quarter of 2025.

According to the company, the Terramar is not intended as a replacement for the existing Ateca mid-sized SUV but will instead form a new space hero for the line-up as a slightly larger offering but with a more accessible in price than the imminent Tavascan.

Exact local powertrain and pricing details are yet to be confirmed but in the brand’s native Spain the Terramar will be offered with a choice of electrified and petrol drivetrains including a plug-in hybrid with 200kW and up to 100km of pure electric range.

It won’t however tread on the toes of the Tavascan which is touted to start at about $65,000 to $70,000 or from roughly $80,000 for the all-wheel drive version. Expect about the $55,000 for a starting price.

Five engine options will be offered with choices of TSI pure combustion power, eTSI mild hybrid tech and Cupra’s newest generation of e-HYBRID plug-in powertrains.

While all options are currently on the cards for Australia, the local line-up with include a high-performance 195 TSI petrol version which gets the same engine as the updated Volkswagen Golf GTI, alongside a plug-in hybrid Terramar. Power for the PHEV ranges from 110kW to 200kW depending on the variant.

Like the recently facelifted Leon and Formentor, the new Terramar wears Cupra’s striking family design language with triple triangle LED matrix head and tail light designs as well as a liberal decorating of copper accents and emblems.

At the back a full-width illuminated light bar sets the illuminated Cupra badge along with cool backlit Terramar name badging, while at the front, a large grille with numerous air ducts and vents are “suggestive of sportscars,” says Cupra.

The Terramar will also continue the family tradition of classy satin paintwork options with Century Bronze and Enceladus Grey introduced for the range, along with choices of seven other gloss tones.

A 12.9-inch touchscreen forms the technological centrepiece of the cabin with the company’s latest operating system features, complementing the driver-focused cabin layout along with digital driver’s display and uncommon Sennheiser sound system.

Interiors will be offered in a range of grades and materials including sporty bucket seats for the most potent versions and an upholstery fabric Cupra calls Seaqual which uses 100 percent up cycled materials and Dynamic synthetic suede which is at least 73 percent recycled.

Rolling on the Volkswagen Group’s ubiquitous and versatile MQB Eco platform, the Terramar like all Cupra models trades on its sporty steering and handling package along with its unique design and styling package.

For the new model, sports suspension and progressive is standard of all variants with new adaptive chassis control and Akebono brake package which will likely be optional or standard on higher performance versions.

When it arrives, the Terramar will slot into the local Cupra family above the initial Formentor, Leon and Ateca models, the more recent Born pure EV, and the Tavascan small electric crossover which is due to land before the end of 2024.
