Cupra is seeking to maintain its momentum by doubling its model portfolio to eight vehicles in the space of a few short years
Cupra has announced it will add two new electrified vehicles to its fleet before 2023 as the brand expands into the Australian market.
The announcement, made on Cupra’s fourth anniversary as a solo company under the Volkswagen Group, will see the Spanish brand double its line-up by 2025.
Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths made the announcement on stage in front of three vehicles; one taking the form of a cloaked wagon and another a coupe-style SUV.
The third car was the already announced electric Urban Rebel concept that will spawn a production vehicle by 2025, following Cupra’s second EV based on the Tavascan SUV concept launching in 2024.
“In the next two years we will announce two new models that no one has yet seen and expand our product range,” Mr Griffiths said.
It remains unclear if the two new models will be fully electric or use a combustion engine with hybrid assistance.
After splitting away from Seat in 2018 to become a separate brand focused on performance vehicles, Cupra has targetted ambitious growth and will launch in Australia in July 2022 with the Ateca small SUV, Formentor midsize SUV and Leon hatch.
Cupra’s first fully-electric vehicle, the Born hatch, is set to arrive before the end of 2022 at an unspecified time, assuming no further delays are experienced.
Mr Griffiths also announced a new vision for the brand known as ‘Cupra X 2’ that aims to rapidly expand the nameplate in every respect.
“The plans we have in store for 2022 include the intention to double our sales, double our turnover and double our sales network,” he said. “This is why we’re calling our ambition Cupra X 2.”
