If put on sale, these concepts would take on the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GT and SL twins, the BMW 8 Series, and the Porsche 911.
Genesis has continued on a roll of revealing lush concept cars at motor
shows, with the luxury marque of Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) this
afternoon whisking the covers off a pair of two-door studies based on the
G90 limousine.
Known as the X Gran Coupe (no relation to BMW) and X Gran Convertible,
the large and dramatic concepts celebrate the tenth anniversary of
Genesis as an independent manufacturer within HMC and are said to
“demonstrate the brand’s future position…through distinct typologies.”
While the basic size and scale of the large G90 four-door sedan has been
maintained, alterations like a lower roofline, more steeply-raked
windscreen and frameless windows clearly differentiate the two
appropriately silver-accented concepts that evoke ‘personal luxury’ tropes
of ‘80s America.
The concepts riff on typical Genesis design accents by widening the
brand’s signature two-line headlights while the crest grille features 3D
grille mesh inspired by metal strings. The fenders are wider than on the
G90 sedan to accommodate a wider track.
The Gran Coupe and Gran Convertible are understood to utilise the
turbocharged, 3.5-litre petrol V6 powertrain fitted to the regular G90
sedan, which produces as much as 305kW of power and 549Nm of torque
with a top speed of 250km/h.
The G90 saloon is not sold in Australia, though it is offered in Genesis’
home market of South Korea as well as North America and Europe.
Beyond the strikingly proportioned exteriors, which deploy separate
interpretations of five-spoke wheel designs, the interiors are said to have
been inspired by Mediterranean olives (in the case of the Gran Coupe)
and the cabernet sauvignon red wine grape (Gran Convertible).
Both cabins are swathed in leather tanned using wastewater from Italian
olive oil production while the interiors are entirely free of chrome. The
leather hide (green and tan in the fixed-roof car, grape blue in the ‘vert)
extends all the way to fully-quilted roof lining.
Embossed wood trim features in both concept interiors in a deep open-
pore navy for the Gran Convertible—which is a soft-top—while a natural
veneer is used for the Gran Coupe.
Lengthened doors compared to the sedan are intended to aid entry and
egress to the second-row seats, while an aluminium daylight opening on
both models sees Genesis eschew typical ‘black pack’ aesthetics.
Both concepts pick up new steering wheels with an aluminium third spoke
and command rotary dials, while the inner rim showcases prominent
deviated stitching.
If built, rivals for the concepts would take in the likes of the Mercedes-
AMG GT and SL twins, the BMW 8 Series, and the Porsche 911.
Genesis is exploring new categories of luxury sports cars at the same time
as it prepares launch a Magma range of high-performance variants, as
well as commence participation in motorsport, via the FIA World
Endurance Championship and IMA Sportscar Championship in 2026 and
2027 respectively.
At this week’s Seoul Mobility Show, the brand is displaying a half-scale
mockup of the GMR-001 hypercar that wil represent the brand in both
disciplines from next year.
