Hyundai’s chief designer has shared his thoughts on the N sub-brand and potential shooting brake versions of the upcoming Ioniq 6
Hyundai’s chief designer Sangyup Lee has said that a shooting brake version of the new Ioniq 6 sedan could be a possibility in the future – as could a high-performance Ioniq 6 N.
In an interview with UK publication Auto Express, Hyundai’s chief designer mentioned when discussing the new Ioniq 6 that he “can make a great hatchback out of that; a shooting brake”.
Mr Lee also told Auto Express that the Ioniq 6 “would make a great performance model.”
The comments come as Hyundai is just days away from the expected reveal of a concept version of an Ioniq 6 N high-performance car.
We expect to see the new electric-based N products on July 15 during Hyundai’s N Day.
If a shooting brake – or station wagon – version of the Ioniq 6 was produced, it could take inspiration from the Hyundai Group’s current Genesis G70 Shooting Brake, that competes in a niche segment with the BMW 330i Touring and Audi A4 45 TFSI Avant in Australia.
Performance wagons, on the other hand, are a very niche thing nowadays, however some do exist such as the Mercedes-AMG C43 and C63 Estate, which was unfortunately not sold in Australia.
The upcoming BMW M3 Touring, which is soon to be released by BMW here in Australia, will become one of the last fast wagons in the modern car market. It is due to be released down under during the first quarter of 2023, with pricing and specifications to be confirmed closer to the time.
