Japanese brand gets sleek electric SUV in China, but will it come to Oz?
The new Mazda EZ-60 has been revealed in China after teaser images earlier in the month.
Like the EZ-6 sedan (known as the Mazda 6e in Europe) the EZ-60 is a joint venture with Chinese carmaker Changan, which brings its Deepal sub-brand to Australia.
Mazda Australia has not made any promises about Changan-based models coming to our market yet.
Underneath the sleek, angular metalwork of the new Arata concept-inspired EZ-60 — which looks distinctively ‘Mazda’ — is the powertrain and EPA1 platform from the Deepal S07 SUV.
That means we can expect a 190kW rear-mounted electric motor and 80kWh battery pack for about 480km of electric driving range.
The twist is, the EZ-60 may not make it out of China. Although the 6e sedan is going to the UK (but not officially coming to Australia), the EZ-60 may face a tougher time as Mazda scales up in-house EV development.
In January, Mazda announced its plans to build a new plant and dedicated electric car platform that will be released in 2027.
Battery technology will come from fellow Japanese brand Panasonic, with next-gen lithium-ion and even solid state technology on the cards.
Reportedly, the key model to come from this new plant and platform will be a mid-size electric SUV targeting the Tesla Model Y, just like the EZ-60. That may be the key ingredient in keeping the Changan-based model in China for good.
There’s no word yet from Mazda Australia if the EZ-60 will come to our market, with the brand not willing to comment on the new model’s potential.
While electric cars are important to the brand, Mazda is keeping its eye on hybrid and efficient combustion engines. The CX-5’s replacement, for example, will feature a Mazda-developed hybrid along with combustion engines.
