Joining the current 1.6-litre turbo-diesel will be an existing 2.0-litre engine that Mercedes-Benz says is “powerful, comfortable and efficient”
Mercedes-Benz has announced that its Vito van range will soon receive the brand’s 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine – the 1950cc OM 654 – that has been in service since debuting in the W213 E-Class in 2016.
The Vito van’s price now starts at $44,058 (before on-road costs) for the 111 SWB van and stretches to $70,336 (before on-road costs) for the Vito Tourer people mover.
The updated Vito range with this larger-capacity diesel engine variant will go on sale in Australia in May 2022.
The Mercedes-Benz Vito competes with other commercial vans such as the Hyundai Staria Load, Ford Transit, Peugeot Expert and Volkswagen Transporter.
The OM 654 turbo-diesel also brings a nine-speed automatic transmission which replaces the outgoing seven-speed, and, according to Mercedes-Benz, brings with it a wider spread of ratio that results in improved drive quality and fuel efficiency.
The engine also has a diesel particulate filter that is located closer to the engine so that it warms up quicker and is therefore more efficient.
The 1950cc engine is all-aluminium in its construction and features balance shafts on either side to make the engine incredibly compact while also contributing to further engine durability and reliability.
Noise and vibration have also been reduced, making the 2022 Vito pleasant and comfortable to ride in, according to Mercedes-Benz.
The OM 654 will be available in two power levels: 120kW/380Nm and 140kW/440Nm and will be offered in panel van, crew cab van and Vito Tourer body styles.
This exact engine has been used in a wide array of Mercedes-Benz vehicles since 2016 including A-, B-, CLA-, C-, E- and GLE-Class variants under the ‘200’ and ‘220’ model names.
Standard equipment on the Mercedes-Benz Vito van includes driver, front-passenger, pelvis and window airbags, attention assist, crosswind assist (for windy conditions), two sliding doors and a one-piece tailgate.
Inside, there is a Audio 30 multimedia system that includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen. A multi-function steering wheel and Bluetooth hands-free are also standard.
Optional equipment on the commercial van includes a three-seat front layout, sidewall tie-down rails, double-wing rear doors, a rail system on the floor, and a load compartment LED lighting strip.
Safety features include adaptive brake lights (which pulsate when braking suddenly), lane-keep assist, blind-spot assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic driving lights, active parking assist, active brake assist and a reversing camera are all standard across the Vito range.
