A significant price increase is coming for the MG3 small car in 2024, but new hybrid power and ICE engines are confirmed for Australia
MG Australia has confirmed that there will be a sizable price increase for its next-generation MG3, which debuts today at the Geneva Motor Show.
A spokesperson from MG Australia announced today that “due to advancements in technology, safety and specification, the MG3 revealed at the Geneva Motor Show will mean the popular model will no longer be a sub-$20,000 car when it launches in Australia this year”.
The Chinese automaker has confirmed that there will be a $5000 price increase, and while exact pricing is yet to be announced, Chasing Cars expects that the MG3 will likely now start from around $25,000 driveaway.
For reference, the outgoing MG3 Core model currently starts from just $19,990 driveaway, only bested on price by the current Kia Picanto.
The new MG3 is expected in Australian showrooms by the middle of 2024.
Despite the $5000 price increase, the MG3 is set to become safer and also likely to be even more efficient thanks to a new hybrid system.
Both hybrid and ICE powertrains are confirmed for a 2024 Australian release. Hybrid specification is yet to be confirmed, however it’s expected to be a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce a reported 130kW of combined power.
It’s also likely that the existing 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with outputs of 82kW/150Nm will remain for the non-hybrid engine.
Inside, new photos show that the MG3 will gain the same screen setup as its MG4 electric cousin, which includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen with a 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster.
Otherwise, MG is keeping tight-lipped about standard specification, however we could see the following feature additions:
