The new MG cars and SUVs heading to Australian showrooms in 2025 and beyond.

MG QS

Vehicle type: Large seven-seater SUV
Launch: Q2

Although MG’s midsized SUV, the HS, hasn’t enjoyed the same success as the ZS compact SUV, the brand is heading into large-SUV territory for the first time with the QS seven-seater.

As with MG’s other SUVs, expect various drivetrain options comprising regular petrol engines, hybrid, and even plug-in hybrid (PHEV) as it takes on key rivals that include the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and Toyota Kluger.

Details for the QS PHEV drivetrain have yet to be revealed, however the petrol variant will be offered as either a FWD or AWD, and feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a nine-speed conventional automatic.

The same engine featured in the Chinese market’s Roewe RX9 sister car produces 150kW and 350Nm.

Pricing would be expected to start close to $40,000, with the smaller, midsize HS currently priced from $40,990 for the most expensive trim grade.

MG ES5/S5

Vehicle type: Compact electric SUV
Launch: Q2 likely

ES5 is another new nameplate for MG in Australia, though the model is an indirect replacement for the ZS EV compact electric SUV.

The ES5 will face more rivals than its predecessor, with the upcoming Kia EV3 in the mix along with the likes of the Smart #1, Jeep Avenger and, later this year, the Skoda Elroq.

Promisingly, the ES5 small SUV is built on the same Modular Scalable Platform architecture as our current favourite MG, the MG4 electric hatch. It is powered by a 125kW/250Nm rear-mounted electric motor.

The ES5 is likely to be offered with either a 49.1kWh or 62.2kWh battery, providing either 425km or 525km of driving range depending on wheel size.

MG7

Vehicle type: Large sedan
Launch: Second half 2025

After introducing Australia’s cheapest sedan in the form of the MG5 in 2023, MG is stepping a size up with the MG7 that will become a more direct rival to the Toyota Camry.

Australian details are yet to be revealed, though the MG7 would be expected to undercut the hybrid-only Camry that starts from $39,990 – while starting above the MG5 that costs between about $25,000 and $28,990 drive-away.

Mg7 2025

In overseas markets, the MG7 is offered in two front-wheel-drive variants: a  138kW/300Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch auto, or a 192kW/405Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired to a conventional nine-speed automatic and electronic limited-slip differential.

A hybrid MG7 is also on the cards.

MG HS Hybrid+ and PHEV

Vehicle type: Midsize SUV
Launch: Second half 2025

The new 2025 MG HS is set to receive a hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrain offering by June 2025. The hybrid HS is expected to start at around $37,000 (RRP), and the PHEV at around $42,000.

As a mid-size hybrid or plug-in hybrid five-seater SUV, the main rivals of the MG HS will be the $45,100 Hyundai Tucson hybrid, $42,260 Toyota RAV4 GX 2WD, and $52,990 Peugeot 3008 hybrid.

While Australian-specific powertrain offerings are yet to be confirmed, it is likely the PHEV MG HS will use the 220kW/350Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor combo offered in the UK market.

In the UK, combined fuel consumption is quoted as 0.5L/100km for the PHEV. The 24.7kWh battery can support a maximum EV driving distance of 75 Miles (120km).

The hybrid MG HS will use a similar petro-electric set-up as the MG3 Hybrid+, though expect higher outputs for the bigger vehicle.

MG5 (safety update)

Vehicle type: Midsize sedan
Launch: Second half 2025

Australian reception to the MG5 has been shaky, after it scored an ANCAP score of 0 in the same year it launched (2023). MG has promised to revise the safety of the MG5 and re-launch the car in 2025, though warns of a price increase for what is currently the country’s cheapest sedan.

The ‘safety pack upgrade’ will include Autonomous Emergency Braking, Speed Assist systems, Lane Assist systems and Pedestrian Protection safety systems as seen in other MG models.

MG3 (safety update)

Vehicle type: Hatchback
Launch: Second half 2025

The MG3 fared better in independent crash testing than the MG5, though it still scored only three out of five stars.

MG will later this year introduce additional safety software, more driver assistance features, and structural improvements in the hope of boosting its ANCAP rating to at least four stars.

Price increases are likely, however.

IM Presented by MG Motors brand launch

Vehicle types: IM6 electric SUV and IM5 electric sedan
Launch: April

MG is gearing up to launch its upmarket “IM Motors” brand in Australia at the Melbourne Motor Show in April.

Two closely related electric vehicles will headline the launch – the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV.

The IM6 SUV is offered in China with mainly 800V electrical architecture and various battery options ranging from 83kWh to 100kWh. As such, potential driving ranges vary from 625km to 802km.

In the least powerful guise with a 400V architecture, the IM6 base model produces 216kW and 450Nm.

The top-spec dual-motor all-wheel-drive version produces 579kW/800Nm, and features equipment such as air suspension, ‘tank turn’ capability, and a 20-speaker sound system are offered.

Expect the IM6 to target the Tesla Model Y in pricing, though the SUV’s 4.9-metre length is a closer match for a luxury electric SUV such as the BMW iX that costs from more than $130,000.

The IM5 sedan features the same range of drivetrain and battery options. A rear-wheel-drive 100kWh battery variant is available, with a claimed driving range as high as 850km.

Similarly to the IM6, the IM5 may be priced closer to higher spec versions of the equivalent Tesla – in this case the Model 3 – though is sized closer to the BMW i5 that’s priced from more than $155,000.

Pricing for the two models is not yet confirmed, though may be revealed at the Melbourne motor show that begins 5th April.
