The Swedish electric car manufacturer says its new 4 SUV coupe will arrive in Asia Pacific regions from early 2024
Electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar this morning revealed its first coupe-SUV model – a midsize crossover badged as the Polestar 4.
Following on from the Polestar 2 electric sedan and the upcoming Polestar 3 large SUV, the 4 blends SUV with coupe for the first time in the Swedish-Chinese brand’s history.
Based on the same SEA architecture that will underpin cars such as the Lotus Eletre and the Polestar 5, the Polestar 4 measures in at 4839mm long, 2139mm wide and 1544mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2999mm.
This will put the Polestar 4 in a similar category to sporty SUVs like the Porsche Macan and BMW X4, though it’s a little longer than those crossovers.
It should also be a bit more affordable. We estimate that the Polestar 4 will be priced somewhere north of $80,000 before on-road costs in Australia in single motor RWD guise.
That’s because the Polestar 4’s EUR60,000 entry point in Europe is about 14 percent dearer than that market’s Polestar 2 long range single motor model that costs $68,400 in Australia.
Such a price could place the up-spec dual motor AWD version somewhere around $90,000, while a fully-loaded car could push towards $120,000.
Polestar has confirmed that production for the Polestar 4 will begin in November 2023 in China, with a full-scale launch in Asia-Pacific regions like Australia planned for early 2024.
The Polestar 4 will be sold in two variants: long-range single motor and long-range dual motor. A single 94kWh-usable battery pack will be the only battery available.
The long-range single motor will use a 200kW/343Nm power unit located on the rear axle and will be capable of hitting 100km/h in 7.4 seconds. This variant will have a range of up to 600km (WLTP)
The flagship long-range, dual-motor will have a motor at each axle, with both electric units producing a combined 400kW/686Nm.
Polestar says the dual-motor variant will be capable of a 3.8-second 0-100km/h time. The dual-motor long-range will have an estimated range of 560km (WLTP).
The slippery shape of the Polestar 4 has earned the model a 0.269Cd drag coefficient – good enough to bring consumption down to sub-16kWh/100km for the single motor variant.
The company says that in dual-motor guise, the Polestar 4 is “the fastest production car the brand has developed to date”.
It’s possible that the brand will introduce a more affordable standard range variant in the future with a smaller battery – possibly with driving range around the 450 km level.
The Polestar 4 will be highly specified and will include the following features as standard:
The dual motor model gains the following features:
The following features are available as options:
The Polestar 4 will be equipped with several safety features as standard, including nine airbags, a new supervision advanced driver assistant system, twelve cameras and twelve ultrasonic sensors.
Also fitted will be a head-up display, a driver monitoring camera and Polestar’s pilot assist system with lane change assistance function.
