Skoda sizes up budget Chinese EVs with new electric SUV – one of six global electric models due by 2026

Skoda is readying a small electric SUV that could compete for the mantle of ‘Australia’s cheapest electric car’ if sold locally, with the new model targeting a price in Europe of €25,000 (AUD$42,000).

Due in 2025, the new small Skoda electric SUV will be built on Volkswagen Group’s new cut-price, front-drive MEB Entry electric architecture.

Skoda said the small SUV will be around 4.2 metres long but will offer interior space on par with the longer 4362mm Scala – including a boot size of around 460 litres, meaning it will likely sit below the Kamiq small SUV in the range.

This small SUV will be styled in Skoda’s new chiselled and blocky “Modern Solid” design language and will be a close relation of similar budget EV models from Volkswagen and Cupra – production versions of the ID2all and the UrbanRebel small EV SUV concepts.

While mechanical details on the budget Skoda EV SUV are scant, its MEB Entry platform supports 38kWh and 56kWh battery sizes, the latter offering around 450km of range. The Skoda is expected to be offered with the 38kWh option in Europe.

Skoda said it’s targeting a European price tag of €25,000 model, which directly converts to around $42,000 in Australia – although it could cost a lot more if introduced locally.

Six electric Skodas confirmed

The small electric SUV is one of six new electric models coming from Skoda before 2026. Skoda revealed six design concept digital ‘sculptures’ previewing the new models, mostly SUVs with long wheelbases, short overhangs and the new Modern Solid styling.

One of those new vehicles is an all-electric ‘Combi’ wagon bucking the SUV trend and expected to replace the Octavia by 2026.

The as-yet-unnamed EV estate will be around 4.6 metres long and the same size as a compact wagon, with the interior space of a larger segment vehicle, Skoda designers said.

In 2026, the wagon will be accompanied by a large electric SUV expected to measure 4.9 metres long – a production version of Skoda’s Vision 7S SUV concept revealed in August last year.

Like the new wagon, Skoda said its large SUV will have interior space of an even-larger vehicle again.

In 2025, the electric version of Skoda’s Enyaq SUV, the iV, will be face-lifted in Skoda’s new EV styling approach.

The current Enyaq iV is due in Australia next year and will be the first electric model sold by the Czech brand Down Under.

Skoda also teased the new Elroq compact EV SUV – expected to replace the Karoq – due in Europe 2024.
