Geely and Mercedes-Benz’s joint venture creations, the Smart #1 and #3 electric SUVs, have been detailed and priced for local shores
Smart Automobile has announced its Australian pricing and specifications for its new Chinese-built range of electric models, the #1 subcompact SUV and the #3 small SUVs.
To be brought to Australia and distributed by automotive group LSH Auto and sold alongside Mercedes-Benz, the Smart brand will offer both electric SUVs with the choice of three variants: Pro+, Premium and Brabus.
Pricing for the Smart #1 is set to start from $54,900 before on-road costs for the Pro+, $58,900 for the Premium and $67,900 for the flagship Brabus.
For the larger Smart #3, pricing will begin at $57,900 for the Pro+, $61,900 for the Premium and $70,900 for the Brabus, all priced before on-road costs.
Smart Automobile is a joint venture between the Mercedes-Benz Group and China’s Geely Holding, the latter of which also produces vehicles under the Lotus, Polestar and Volvo Car banners.
Smart previously sold cars in Australia for a period of 13 years. It left our local market in 2015 after shifting a relatively small amount of vehicles throughout that timeframe.
The first of the new electric Smart cars are expected to arrive in Australia from September 2024.
Both Smart models are based upon Geely’s SEA electric platform, the same platform underpinning the likes of the recently-released Volvo EX30.
Under the skin of the Smart #1 Pro+ is a 62kWh usable battery pack that provides power to a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 200kW/343Nm. The #1 Premium also uses this same powertrain configuration and battery size.
The flagship Smart #1 Brabus uses the same 62kWh usable battery, but pushes outputs out to 315kW/543Nm thanks to a dual-motor, all-wheel drive electric drive setup.
Stepping to the Smart #3, the entry Pro+ grade uses the same 62kWh usable battery pack as the #1 and produces identical power to the #1 Pro+ (200kW/343Nm).
And while the Smart #3 Premium is identical in powertrain to the base Pro+, the top-spec Brabus uses a dual-motor setup to produce 315kW/543Nm.
Electric driving range is as much as 420km (WLTP) for the Smart #1, and a maximum of 435km (WLTP) for the #3.
Both Smart SUV models largely mirror the same levels of specifications across three different trim levels.
Beginning with the Pro+ grade, the Smart #1 will include:
The Premium grade adds the following:
The top-spec Brabus adds:
The Smart range of vehicles are yet to be tested by ANCAP, however the models will have the following safety features:
