Ssangyong Musso ute 2023: electric dual-cab ute with 1000km range reportedly in development

One of the first cars built under Ssangyong’s new management, led by Edison Motors, could be an all-electric dual-cab ute

Ssangyong, which is now owned by Korean electric bus company Edison Motors, could be developing a long-range battery-electric dual-cab ute under either the Musso or Rexton Sport nameplates.

Insider information from South Korean publication DailyCar suggests that SsangYong is “in the midst” of developing an electric ute.

Currently, the Rexton Sport dual-cab ute is the best-selling model in the Ssangyong range over in South Korea, accounting for more than half of Ssangyong sales in that market.

There could be significant demand for an electric dual-cab ute in Australia, where the segment is expected to grow in the next decade as diesel utes begin to be supplemented by cleaner alternatives including a future electrified Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux hybrid – plus expected electric utes from China’s LDV and BYD.

What could the electric Ssangyong Rexton Sport be like?

The Rexton Sport, branded as the Musso outside of South Korea, measures in at 5095mm long, 1950mm wide, 1840mm tall and has a wheelbase of 3100mm.

According to DailyCar, Edison Motors plans to put a 110-220kWh battery in the Rexton Sport to put it well ahead of the competition, with the company expecting the ute to be able to travel up to 1100km on a single charge – plenty for those who like to do long distance Australian touring.

A ‘high ranking company official’ has said that a mass-produced version of the electric ute could be revealed to the public within a year.

If the electric Musso is produced, it could have one of the longest ranges in the world for an electric ute

With the reveal of some serious heavy hitters in the segment such as the Tesla Cybertruck, Rivian R1T, Ford F-150 Lightning and Ram electric ute, the Musso ‘e-motion’ could out muscle them all, if it can be made and if reports are correct.

The Ford F-150 Lightning has a total expected range of 480km, while the Tesla Cybertruck boasts a top-spec range of up to 800km. The Rivian R1T ute expects a total range of 640km+ of range.

If and when Ssangyong brings the electric Rexton Sport to market, it could hold the record as the ute with the longest electric range globally.
