The Fortuner is the next in line to get the GR Sport treatment and has already been launched in Thailand, but is still unconfirmed for Australia
Toyota has announced a GR Sport grade of the Fortuner large SUV in Thailand, featuring more aggressive new styling but no major performance changes.
The Fortuner GR Sport has not yet been confirmed for the Australian market, similar to the closely related Hilux GR Sport ute that debuted back in August.
It joins a growing list of Toyota’s to be adorned with the Gazoo Racing (GR) badge, that also includes the Land Cruiser 300 Series and the Yaris hot hatch.
While the full blown GR badging is designated for the high performance Toyota variants, the GR Sport range is much more cosmetic than full-blown performance.
Much like the Hilux GR Sport, the Fortuner receives an array of cosmetic upgrades inside and out to make it stick out from the pack.
The Fortuner GR Sport has an aggressive look thanks to a blacked out front grille, roof, mirror caps, rear spoiler and a grey set of 20-inch wheels.
On the inside, the red and black GR theme continues throughout, from the perforated suede and leather seats to the red-stitched centre console.
Additional leather trim can be found on the steering wheel and gear shifter which compliments alloy sports pedals and a GR-branded starter button.
While the 150kW/ 500Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine remains unchanged, the Fortuner GR Sport does get double wishbone front and four link rear suspension with new Monotube shock absorbers.
Toyota says it has re-tuned the six-speed torque converter automatic to provide a sportier feel and added paddle shifters to let drivers take over at will.
Ventilated discs front and rear are covered by red brake calipers with GR branding.
The Fortuner GR Sport is fitted with Toyota’s safety sense which includes a pre-collision system (AEB), along with lane departure warning and dynamic radar cruise control. Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are also standard.
