Volkswagen has filed for a patent that will transform the ID. Buzz electric van into a ute
Volkswagen is set to bring a ute to market in the coming years but it won’t be the electric Amarok we were hoping for.
According to reports by Auto Express, Volkswagen has filed for a patent that could see the manufacturer build a pick-up truck version of the ID Buzz electric people mover.
It could use the same 82kWh battery pack as found in the standard ID Buzz, which is powered by a rear-mounted, 148kW electric motor.
A higher-powered GTX version is also reportedly in the works, which could lift outputs to 220kW/472Nm, making the ID Buzz a pretty serious people mover or ute, depending on what takes your fancy.
The closest that Australians will get to a Volkswagen ute will of course be the next-generation Amarok dual-cab ute, that is slated for release locally in the first quarter of 2023 – more specifically January or February.
But this new Amarok has not been confirmed to have either hybrid or fully-electric powertrains just yet – though we could see something develop further down the product cycle.
The ID Buzz electric van has been available to order in Europe since May of this year, but there has been no confirmation yet as to whether the ID Buzz, in any form, will be coming down under.
The quirky people mover is on Volkswagen Australia’s wish list, but it could be a couple of years before the German manufacturer commits to bringing it Down Under.
The ID Buzz could compete with other futuristic and modern people movers such as the Hyundai Staria and the Toyota Granvia in a popular segment for large families.
