Volkswagen is celebrating 20 years of its R Performance division with a high-performance edition of the Mk8 Golf R
Volkswagen R models will receive some special treatment this year for the 20 year anniversary of the Volkswagen R brand.
It all started with the original R32 Golf 20 years ago, and now the Mk8 Golf R will receive a modest power boost for Europe and Australia.
Volkswagen Australia confirmed to Chasing Cars that the Golf R 20 Year edition car will be coming to our shores during Q3 2022 with 245kW and “a slightly different specification for Australia”.
The first big change will be increases in power and torque for the Golf R’s 2.0-litre turbocharged EA888 engine. Outputs will be reportedly raised to 245kW/420Nm thanks to a different tune – up from 235kW in European and Australian specification.
An Akrapovic titanium exhaust system will also be fitted, which will surely give the Golf R more character and bark than the current stock system. The DSG transmission has also been tinkered with to give more feedback when upshifting.
According to Autocar, the turbocharger now also spins at a constant speed, even under part throttle, which makes throttle response more immediate.
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
