MG Australia has announced the first key details of its upcoming compact electric SUV
The MG S5 will bring bigger dimensions and increased range for smaller-battery variants as it prepares to take over from the ZS EV in May.
MG’s S5 electric small SUV moves closer to 4.5 metres in length to extend beyond the 4.3-odd metres of the Hyundai Kona Electric and new Kia EV3, and just ahead of the BYD Atto 3.
Two battery sizes will be offered across two trim grades: Excite and Essence.
The smaller, 49kWh battery provides up to 340km of WLTP range in the Excite or up to 335km in the Essence. WLTP ranges increase to 430km and 425km, respectively, for Excite and Essence versions of the 62kWh battery.
While the smaller battery improves on the 320km WLTP of the outgoing ZS EV with 51kWh battery, the 62kWh models offer slightly less range than the 73kWh ZS EV.
All models feature a 125kW/250Nm front electric motor – the same outputs as the base MG4 electric hatch with which it shares its platform.
The S5’s performance spectrum goes against the norm, with the cheapest – and lightest – model offering the fastest acceleration: 0-100km/h in a claimed 8.0 seconds. Mid-range models share 8.2 seconds, while the top-spec 62kWh Essence (the heaviest variant) is slowest with 8.6 seconds.
Key features for the two trim grades are as follows:
The S5’s boot space is quoted at 453 litres – a big increase over the 359 litres offered by the ZS EV. This expands to 1441L with the rear seatbacks folded.
Pricing for the MG S5 has yet to be confirmed ahead of its arrival in local showrooms in May.
The electric ZS it replaces was priced in late 2024 from $39,990 to $46,990 drive-away depending on variant, with a special $36,888 drive-away run-out offered in early 2025.
