Chinese manufacturer Chery is hoping that a friendly price tag, a seven-year warranty and a long list of features will woo Australian buyers
Chery Australia has confirmed that the first vehicle in its re-entry into the local market, the Omoda 5 small SUV, will have a starting price of under $40,000 driveaway. However, the exact pricing for the two-variant model is yet to be revealed.
The Omoda 5 will arrive in two grades, the base and top-spec EX, powered by a 115kW/230Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that feeds power to the front wheels via a CVT transmission.
Set to go on sale in March via a national network of 40 dealers in 1.5 FWD guise, the Omoda 5 will also be offered in the second half of the year with a larger 1.6-litre turbo variant and AWD.
However, the most highly anticipated variant is likely to be a fully-electric version of the Omoda 5, with the yet-to-be-unveiled small SUV confirmed to arrive in the first half of 2024.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Chery executives confirmed they were seeking to make up around eight percent of sales in the small SUV under $40,000 segment, where the Mazda CX-30 and MG ZS compete.
Based on the total number of sales in 2022 and if numbers remained steady, that would project almost 10,000 Omoda 5s sales in the coming year.
Hoping to entice buyers to the unfamiliar brand, Chery has also confirmed it will offer the Omoda 5 with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.
Buyers will also be offered seven years of free roadside assistance as well as a yet-unconfirmed capped-price servicing program across the same duration, which Chery executives promise will be aggressively priced.
Chery executives expect the Omoda 5 to score five-stars once it is officially crash-tested by ANCAP.
The vehicle has thus far scored five stars when tested by European NCAP in November 2022, but further testing for the local vehicle is deemed necessary to produce a local score.
Chery says the Omoda 5 will feature 16 driver assistance features and has confirmed that the model will bring contemporary features such as reversing AEB and a front-centre airbag.
Chery has released a preview of the list of features available on the Omoda 5, with a complete list of inclusions expected to follow next week.
