Cupra’s fast and feisty small SUV is set to go on sale in Australia in a matter of weeks, loaded with equipment and priced to match
Inbound Spanish performance brand Cupra has confirmed its high-performance Ateca small SUV will be priced from $65,990 driveaway when it arrives in Australia in July.
Cupra will launch the Ateca in a single,fully-equipped grade known as the VZx, unlike the Formentor midsize SUV and Leon hatch that will feature multiple variants.
When the Cupra Ateca arrives in Australia, it will take on a growing category of small performance SUVs including the Hyundai Kona N, Volkswagen T-Roc R and Audi SQ2.
The Ateca shares much of its oily bits with Volkswagen’s T-Roc R, including the ‘EA888’ 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine that produces 221kW of power and 400Nm of torque in both vehicles.
Coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that feeds grunt to a Haldex all-wheel-drive system, the Cupra Ateca slays the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 4.9 seconds.
Cupra has fitted adaptive dampers as standard on the Australian-bound Ateca, and buyers can option an Akrapovic exhaust ($5950) or a Brembo Brake package ($4050) if they wish.
Cupra has dressed the exterior of the Ateca in 19-inch alloy wheels coated in black and copper paint which combines with other aggressive touches including a quad exhaust system.
LED headlights and tail-lights are fitted as standard, and are complemented by fog lights with a cornering function. These join other convenience features such as a power tailgate, keyless entry and a 360-degree camera.
Inside the Ateca’s cabin, Cupra has fitted three-zone climate control, leather upholstery, a wireless phone charger, 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a 9.2-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that plays music via a nine-speaker Beats sound system.
The driver’s seat benefits from power adjustment, with both front occupants and the steering wheel featuring a heating function.
Safety features include AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, front and rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and driver fatigue monitoring.
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
