Cupra Formentor 2022 pricing revealed: from $55K driveaway in Australia

Expected to be Cupra’s best-selling model in Australia, the five-seat Formentor SUV has been priced – and it is less expensive than some predicted

The new Cupra Formentor midsize SUV will be released in Australia in July with the four-strong lineup commencing at $54,990 driveaway.

Fixed driveaway pricing will be available throughout Australia on three of the four variants, though driveaway deals on the Formentor VZe plug-in hybrid differ depending on what state or territory the buyer lives in.

Chasing Cars has already published a detailed rundown of each Formentor grade, which runs from the Formentor V entry grade, through to VZ and VZe (hybrid) mid-spec cars and a VZx flagship. Each trim corresponds to both more equipment and higher performance.

The Formentor will land in Australia alongside Cupra’s other models: the Leon hatchback and Ateca small SUV, while the fully-electric Born hatch is expected to join the local lineup very late in 2022 or early in 2023.

Formentor V pegged at $54,990 driveaway

The entry-level Formentor V ($50,690, $54,990 driveaway) produces 140kW of power and 320Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine. A seven-speed wet-clutch DSG automatic transmission and a Haldex all-wheel drive system are standard, as are adaptive dampers.

Related to the Volkswagen Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq, the Formentor sits on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB Evo platform.

Inclusions for the V grade take in 18-inch wheels, metallic paint, full LED headlights, LED tail lights, a rear spoiler, aluminum mirror covers, and gloss black roof rails.

The Formentor is a midsize SUV with a variety of petrol-fuelled powertrains…plus a hybrid

Inside, Cupra buyers will enjoy a 12-inch touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, tri-zone climate control, bucket seats trimmed in cloth and a heated steering wheel.

Safety tech for the V includes forwards and reversing AEB, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and driver fatigue detection.

Options for the V include a leather and power package ($2750) that buncles leather seating with heating, power adjustment and memory in the front, plus a power tailgate. A panoramic sunroof is $2100 while three premium metallic paint colours will cost $475.

Mid-spec Formentor VZ and VZe straddle sixty grand

Stepping up to the VZ and VZe each bring 180kW of power – in their own way. The petrol VZ uses the V’s 2.0-litre petrol and seven-speed DSG auto to make 180kW/370Nm conventionally, while the plug-in hybrid VZe pairs a 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbo with an 85kW/300Nm electric motor for system outputs of 180kW/400Nm.

The Formentor VZ has been priced at $53,790 ($58,490 driveaway), while the VZe has a list price of $60,990. Driveaway prices for the hybrid vary: $65,990 in New South Wales and South Australia, $66,490 in Victoria, $64,990 in Queensland, $66,990 in Western Australia, and $63,990 in the ACT – while pricing for Tasmania and the NT are to be advised.

A large touchscreen and digital instrument cluster are standard-fit on Formentor

Both the VZ and VZe are actually front-wheel drive rather than all-wheel drive, as per the base V and top-shelf VZx. Both gain 19-inch wheels, growing in size from the V’s 18s, while the option packages are the same as the entry-level car.

The hybrid scores a Type 2, Mode 3 charging cable, though AC charging speeds are limited to 3.6kW. It has a range of 55km (WLTP) on electric power alone, though it makes do with a tyre repair kit rather than a spare wheel.

Top-tier Formentor VZx is $66,490 driveaway

Arriving well under $70,000 is the top-shelf VZx grade, which reverts to the VZ’s 2.0-litre turbo but with the wick turned up to 228kW/400Nm – and with AWD added back in, working in concert with the seven-speed DSG automatic.

Standard equipment is increased to take in 19-inch black/copper wheels, quad exhaust tips, and a power tailgate. Inside, you will notice the petrol blue leather seats with driver’s adjustment and memory, plus the ‘Supersports’ steering wheel and nine-speaker Beats stereo with a 340-watt amplifier.

A plug-in hybrid model will be available, but other Formentors will be turbo petrol-engined

Options on the VZx include bigger Brembo brakes ($4150) and matte paint ($2300), plus premium metallic paint ($475) and a panoramic sunroof ($2100).

Parts shortages have seen the VZx’s previously-announced 360-degree parking camera replaced by a standard reversing camera until MY23 production starts.
