New electric SUV arrives with sharp price but does Geely EX5 have what it takes to topple Tesla Model Y?

Geely Auto has released official pricing for its first vehicle in the Australian market, the EX5 family SUV.

The announcement of the entry level Complete’s bargain basement $40,990 (before on-road costs) price comes after Chasing Cars first sampled the car in February.

Geely’s final price was sharpened up further from earlier leaked pricing of $43,490, before on-road costs, which Chasing Cars obtained from an industry guide.

Building on the price offer alone, Geely is backing the EX5 with a benchmark seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty in Australia.

Additionally, the launch offer including a year of free Evie public charging and three years of scheduled servicing — worth about $1500 — has been boosted with free premium paint and home charger installation, and has been extended until April 30. Geely is serious about being a top-ten player in Australia.

The brand also announced that it would introduce another new, larger model soon with the goal of six launches over the next three years. Not all will be fully electric.

Compared to rivals, the EX5 certainly carries the sharpest price on paper, even in up-spec Inspire trim. See below how the Complete compares, including to the smaller BYD Atto 3.

Like the Leapmotor C10, the sharp price puts the Geely in genuine price competition with established internal combustion and hybrid SUVs, like the Toyota RAV4 Cruiser 2WD hybrid ($51,410, before on-road costs).

For the outlay, the EX5 Inspire has a single 160kW/320Nm front motor, 60.22kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) giving 430km driving range, and 100kW DC fast-charging, good for jumping from 20-80 per cent in 28 minutes.

The Geely EX5 Complete’s standard features are listed below:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Full LED exterior lighting, auto highbeam
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Keyless entry
  • Tilt and telescope steering wheel
  • Wireless charging pad
  • 15.4-inch touchscreen with navigation
  • 10.2-inch digital driver’s display
  • Artificial leather upholstery
  • Heated and six-way power-adjust driver’s seat
  • Six-speaker sound system

EX5 Inspire builds on equipment but keeps the motor and battery specs identical. The larger 19-inch alloys result in a 20km range drop to 410km (WLTP).

Geely EX5 Inspire ($44,990) features, in addition to Complete:

  • Power tailgate
  • Front parking sensors
  • Illuminated vanity mirrors
  • 256-colour ambient lighting
  • Climate control
  • Driver’s seat memory; legrest for front passenger
  • Front seat ventilation and massage function
  • 1000-watt, 16-speaker sound system
  • Head-up display
  • Optional ‘Cream’ upholstery colour

On our first drive, the EX5 showed promise such as cabin space, level of technology included and real-world efficiency but EX5 was far from perfect — mainly software glitches and safety assist intervention, which the brand says it’s working to fix.

The Geely EX5 is now available to order with deliveries beginning March 11.
