How do I buy a Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Australia?

It’s the hottest new EV on the market but getting your hands on one is proving a challenge. Here are our tips for buying a Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 midsize SUV officially went on sale at 9:30am on Tuesday, October 12th and less than two hours later, the first batch of 240 cars were entirely sold out.

The vaporising of local stock speaks to the Ioniq 5’s popularity and getting your hands on one is still proving to be quite the challenge in Australia.

Buyers have flocked to the Ioniq 5 as well as rivals such as the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2 sedans, with a respectable driving range and a relatively affordable price a key drawcard of all three.

Guido Schenken, Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s (HMCA) public relations senior manager, told Chasing Cars it was switching to a state by state distribution strategy.

The NSW and the ACT are next in line to receive an allocation, which will be accessible on the HMCA website from Thursday, December 16 at 12pm AEDT.

The exact number of cars that will be available are to be confirmed in the coming days but HMCA previously promised 400 units has been allocated to Australia for delivery by early 2022, including the 240 sold in the first batch.

Mr Schenken stressed that while NSW and ACT were the first to be offered a purchase slot they would not be favoured in terms of delivery times.

“We are staggering the ordering process across the other States in the coming weeks to assist in managing order processing timeframes,” he said.

“Note that this will not affect delivery timing – that is, even though NSW and ACT have ordered first, they will not receive their cars before other states.”

Mr Schenken said the best way to make sure you secure a new Ioniq 5 is to register on the Hyundai.com.au website, which will notify you when a new batch is on sale.

More to Ioniq 5’s to come next year

With parts shortages still affecting the industry and demand high for EVs in Europe, HMCA has not yet outlined its estimated allocation for Australia in 2022 but Chasing Cars expect to see around 1000 units on our shores during this time.

At launch, HMCA released the Ioniq 5 in single long-range and highly specified grade with prices starting at $71,900 for the RWD model and $75,900 for the AWD model, with both figures not including on-road costs.

HMCA stated at the time that it would diversify the range in 2022, potentially opening the door for more affordable short-range variants of the Ioniq 5 – as we saw with the Kona Electric small SUV this year.
