Maserati MC20 2021: all-new Italian supercar sold out in Australia

Maserati’s first new supercar in more than a decade caused such a stir on its release that the Australian allocation sold out almost immediately.

The 2021 Maserati MC20 is the first true supercar for the trident brand since the Enzo-based MC12 in 2004. Like the MC12, the MC20 is mid-engined and focused on driver enjoyment.

Unlike the extremely limited MC12, the new Maserati supercar is more affordable, with a list price of $438,000 in Australia. The cost and size of the MC20 see it line up against venerable foes like the Porsche 911 GT3, Ferrari 296 GTB and McLaren Artura.

The new Maserati MC20 is quite an eyecatching bit of kit.

Unfortunately, the MC20 is all sold out for 2021 in Australia, so buyers will have to wait for the next batch to drop.

How much power does the MC20 have?

The MC20’s V6 engine may only be half the size of the MC12’s 6.0L V12, but it doesn’t half have some bite. The mid-mounted 3.0L twin-turbo V6 makes 470kW of power and 730Nm – 6kW and 78Nm more than the MC12.

The V6 also engine also sounded pretty fantastic when the MC20 made its debut up the Goodwood hillclimb last month.

This twin-turbo V6 is the first Maserati built engine in some time.

Combine the outputs with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, rear-wheel drive and sub-1,500kg kerb weight, and Maserati’s 2.9-second 0-100km/h sprint sounds pretty realistic.

The MC20 will go on to 200km/h in a claimed 8.8-seconds before topping out at over 325km/h – that is, if you can find a long enough runway.

Maserati’s new V6 also marks a return to the storied marque producing its own powertrains. Sitting under the Stellantis umbrella, Maserati’s staple products like the Levante and Quattroporte lean heavily on Alfa and Ferrari power plants. So the MC20 is an exciting step.

What sets Maserati’s supercar apart?

The amazing butterfly doors add even more drama to the MC20’s appearance.

For a start, there’s the appearance. The MC20 is a svelte design that isn’t groundbreaking or in-your-face. We’ll hold off final comments until we’ve seen one in the flesh, but initial signs are promising.

Unique features like the intricate butterfly doors catch the eye and supposedly make ingress easier.

Inside the cabin is a pared-back centre console with buttons for gear selection and paddles for manual control. There is one 10-inch touchscreen to control the infotainment and a 10-inch digital driver’s display ahead of the driver.

Inside, though, the supercar is ultra minimal and focused on the task of driving.

There is also a wireless charger and simple drive-mode selector to keep the cabin as minimal as possible.

Maserati sold through the first Australian allocation of MC20s priced from $438,000. The brand is now accepting orders for the next drop.
