MG ZS EV 2024: major price cut confirmed for Australia

Repositioned ZS EV electric small SUV now starts at a price point $8000 lower than its chief rival, the BYD Atto 3

The MG ZS EV electric small SUV has had a major price cut in Australia with cost decreases across the three-strong range for 2024.

Higher pricing for the ZS EV had seemed untenable following the launch of the better-driving but smaller MG4 electric hatchback, which starts from $38,990 before on-road costs.

The cuts range between six and 10 percent depending on the grade. MG lopped $6000 from the price of the flagship ZS EV Long Range variant, now $50,990 before on-road costs.

Long Range versions use a 69.9kWh usable battery to provide 426km of urban range and 358km of highway range as tested by Chasing Cars.

Two lower grades, which have smaller 49.0kWh usable batteries, have also been repriced. The base model Excite now wears sharper $40,990 tags (down $3000) while the mid-range Essence is down $4000 to $43,990.

Unusually, it is the lower-range models that have more power, using a single electric motor on the front axle to produce 130kW of power and 280Nm of torque.

The Long Range variant ekes out additional efficiency by turning down the same motor to 115kW.

That big-battery model managed a respectable 7.48sec 0-100km/h result in Chasing Cars performance testing, though emergency braking was mediocre at 39.88 metres from 100-0km/h.

While the ZS EV can’t match the higher-quality driving dynamics of its compact sibling, its dramatic repositioning is a clear shot across the bow of its chief rival – the BYD Atto 3.

BYD’s Atto 3 remains priced at $48,011 for a 50kWh Standard Range version and $51,011 for the 60kWh Extended Range model – both before on-road costs.
