MG’s most popular model in Australia, the ZS small SUV, has had its Hybrid+ variants priced for Australian shores, starting from $33,990 driveaway
MG Australia is confident its new-generation ZS will continue the brand’s sales leadership of the compact-SUV segment thanks to the addition of hybrid technology and retention of keen pricing.
The second-generation MG ZS launched this week with the model’s first ever petrol-electric drivetrain, and pricing that starts from $33,990 drive-away to undercut all hybrid rivals except the GWM Haval Jolion ($31,990 drive-away).
An Essence grade with more equipment costs from $36,990, though MG has confirmed the ZS Hybrid+ will be followed in early 2025 by two petrol engine options.
The MG Australia website confusingly features higher drive-away prices for the ZS Hybrid+ models – the $33,990/$36,990 prices are instead featured in the View Offers section. This confirms the drive-away pricing is for a limited time only, with an MG spokesperson saying the prices should hold until at least the end of 2024.
These will comprise a normally aspirated engine that can be expected to power the ‘price leader’ base ZS, with a turbocharged three-cylinder the other anticipated petrol offering.
There will be no replacement for the outgoing fully electric ZS EV. MG will next year instead introduce the ES5 battery compact SUV, which is based on the MG4 electric hatchback.
The ZS hybrid drivetrain teams up a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor, producing combined outputs of 158kW and 465Nm. Official fuel consumption is rated at 4.7 litres per 100km.
MG Australia suggested the entry-level petrol ZS coming in early 2025 would match the sub-$26,000 drive-away price of the outgoing 1.5L ZS owing to the new-gen model’s extra safety and convenience features.
The 2025 ZS is nearly 11cm longer than its predecessor, now reaching 4430mm on the measuring tape. The wheelbase gains just 2.5cm of that, width is out by just under a centimetre, and the SUV’s height drops by 18mm.
Boot space makes a big gain – increasing by 84 litres to 443L, or by 270L to 1457L with the 60-40 rear seats folded.
Japanese and Korean brands in Australia also offer hybrid compact SUV rivals to the Chinese ZS and Jolion, though models from Honda (HR-V), Hyundai (Kona), Subaru (Crosstrek), and Toyota (C-HR, Corolla Cross) start from closer to $40,000 and above with on-road costs factored in.
The Nissan Qashqai e-Power hybrid starts from above $50,000.
The MG ZS Hybrid+ is well equipped across two trim grades, despite its relatively low price:
