The Swedish brand is expanding in Australia with its third EV now on sale from $81,500 before on road costs
Months after pricing was leaked early, the Polestar 4 electric SUV is now officially available for online sale in Australia priced from $81,500 before on road costs, with first deliveries to be expected from August.
The Tesla Model Y competitor which was revealed last year will be the brand’s third vehicle to launch in Australia and will sit in between the Polestar 2 liftback and Polestar 3 large SUV in both size and price when it arrives locally in a two-grade lineup that will also compete against the likes of the BMW iX3 and Audi Q4 E-Tron.
The coupe-style SUV sports a sleek design aimed at delivering a low drag coefficient, with “the fastest Polestar production car to date” also having a claimed 3.8-second 0-100km/h time for the range-topping model, according to the brand.
Both Polestar 4 variants are powered by permanent magnet synchronous motors, with the choice of either a long-range single motor or long-range dual-motor.
Each is equipped with a 94kWh-usable 400V lithium-ion battery pack.
The long-range single motor uses a 200kW/343Nm power unit located on the rear axle and capable of hitting 100km/h in 7.4 seconds. It also comes with a claimed WLTP range of 610km.
The range-topping long range dual-motor has both front and rear mounted motors delivering a combined power output for 400kW and 686Nm, delivering a claimed 3.8-second 0-100km/h sprint as well as a claimed WLTP range of up to 580km.
While the entry-grade has a single speed transmission, the dual motor couples this with a clutch to disengage the front motor when not needed to maximise efficiency.
Both variants can use up to 200kW DC and 22kW AC charging and Polestar claims the SUV can be charged from 10-80 per cent charge in 30 minutes using a 200kW DC charger.
The Polestar 4 measures in at 4840mm long, 2139mm wide, and 1534mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2999mm, making it similar in size to the BMW X4 and Porsche Macan, if a little bigger.
The Polestar 4 comes equipped with a host of standard features, as well as several option packs.
It is however worth noting a key design feature for the new vehicle: the elimination of the rear window, which also means that a rear view mirror is replaced with a screen that shows a real time feed from a roof mounted camera.
Polestar says this enables a wider field of view compared to other modern cars and the digital feed can also apparently be switched off to allow drivers to see rear occupants if needed
In its base grade, the Polestar 4 comes equipped with features such as:
Stepping up to the dual-motor only brings a few additional features on top of the single motor, namely:
Where the dual-motor works to justify its additional cost is with its powertrain and significant performance upgrade. Furthermore, a performance pack can also be optioned on the dual motor but is not available on the single motor.
A number of option packs are available at cost on the Polestar 4 including a Plus Pack ($8000), Pro Pack ($2500) and Performance Pack ($7200; dual-motor only).
The Plus Pack brings additional features including:
The Pro Pack brings an additional three features:
A Performance Pack can only be optioned on the long range dual-motor, but only in addition to the Plus Pack. It includes features such as:
A Nappa leather upgrade which also brings with it features like ventilated and massaging front seats and additional headrest speakers can also be optioned on both grades on top of the required Plus Pack.
The Polestar 4 is as yet untested by ANCAP in Australia, however all variants come equipped with safety features including:
As well as this, each grade is equipped with seven airbags including driver and front passenger, dual side, dual curtain, and inner side airbags.
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
