We’ve put two of the most important new four-wheel drives against each other to see which comes out on top on spec
The Toyota Land Cruiser is as iconic as it gets here in Australia. Loved by thousands and cherished by fans right across the globe, the Land Cruiser name doesn’t just symbolise reliability, but also has the workhorse traits people can depend on.
But if there was a newcomer that could seriously challenge the famous Land Cruiser nameplate, it’s the new Ineos Grenadier, fresh to the market and recently launched in Australia.
Let’s take a look at both models on the spec sheet, see what they’re worth and find out which one you should be looking at.
Time to dive into another Chasing Cars spec battle! We’ll be putting the 76 Series base model Workmate wagon against the entry Ineos Grenadier station wagon.
Beginning with the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series, pricing for the new four-cylinder 76 series Workmate wagon starts from $75,600 before on-road costs, however the higher grade turbo-diesel V8 GXL variant will cost buyers $83,900 before on-road costs.
For reference, the most expensive 70 Series for 2024, the 79 Series dual cab ute, costs $86,700 before on-road costs.
According to the Australian Ineos website, the Grenadier SUV in its simplest five-door station wagon form is much more expensive than the Land Cruiser and is priced at $110,000 before on-road costs, with the most expensive variant costing $123,000 before on-road costs.
The updated 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series wagon, also known as the 76 Series, brings some new features to the table, along with long-standing previous equipment, including:
Meanwhile, the new Ineos Grenadier features the following equipment from the factory:
Both models seem to give the customer decent all-terrain purpose for their money, however these are by no means affordable, entry-level off-roaders.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series has the option of two powertrains: a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder or 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine.
The new-to-Land-Cruiser 2.8-litre engine is borrowed from the current Hilux and Prado and produces 150kW/500Nm. It’s mated to an six-speed automatic transmission for the first time in 70 Series history. Toyota’s 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine produces 151kW/430Nm.
Ineos, meanwhile, sources its engines from BMW. The Grenadier utilises a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine that produces either 210kW/450Nm in petrol guise, or 183kW/550Nm in turbo-diesel guise.
These straight-six engines are mated to a ZF eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
On raw numbers alone, the Grenadier seems to be the hotter package for those wanting more grunt off the beaten path.
Toyota has stuck to its roots with the 2024 70 Series Land Cruiser, retaining many of the original off-road features.
The 70 Series range includes the following off-road abilities and features:
Meanwhile, the Ineos Grenadier features the following four-wheel drive features as standard:
It’s hard to say based on the specifications alone, however the Grenadier could be the winner with its impressive approach and departure angles, permanent four-wheel drive and off-road modes.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series is safer than ever for 2024, though its current ANCAP five-star rating from 2016 is set to expire this month.
For 2024, Toyota has updated the 70 Series safety equipment, which now includes:
The Ineos Grenadier comes standard with the following safety features:
For 2024, both of these four-wheel drives offer very compelling off-road packages for the money.
While the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series has the name and arguably the reliability to go with it, the Ineos Grenadier offers that little bit more on the spec sheet when it comes to the overall package.
The Ineos is quite a bit more expensive than the Land Cruiser, but could arguably be the more capable off-roader of the two.
But which would you choose?
