The Volkswagen T-Roc will officially go on sale in August to act as a high-riding alternative to the popular Golf R
Volkswagen has announced the T-Roc R small SUV will go on sale in Australia priced from $59,300 before on-road costs.
The T-Roc will go on sale in August where it will join the Tiguan R midsize SUV on showroom floors as Volkswagen extends its ‘R’ performance brand to SUVs in Australia for the first time.
Senior Volkswagen Australia product planners say that the T-Roc R’s sub-$60,000 positioning provides customers with a more direct replacement of the previous-gen Mk 7.5 Golf R, which cost $57,990 when it was discontinued.
The new Mk 8 Golf R stepped up in price to $65,990 — creating room for the T-Roc R to enter as something of a high-performance price leader.
When it arrives in Australian showrooms T-Roc R will compete in the budding performance-oriented small SUV segment against the Hyundai Kona N and Cupra Ateca.
Volkswagen has armed the T-Roc R will its mainstay ‘EA888’ 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine producing 221kW of power and 400Nm of torque.
The engine is cooped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that feeds power to the same Haltex-style all-wheel-drive system as the Mk 7.5 Golf R – rather than the more flexible and powerslide-friendly twin-clutch unit found in the Mk 8 Golf R.
The T-Roc R will also feature adaptive dampers as standard and progressive steering to provide a more dynamic driving ability in tighter bends.
Volkswagen designers have worked to make the T-Roc R more intimidating than the core range by fitting a more aggressive body kit and 19-inch ‘Estoril’ alloy wheels.
The interior benefits from a 9.2-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that is wisely paired with a wireless phone charging pad.
Volkswagen also offers a digital driver’s display in the T-Roc R which is likely the same 10.25-inch unit offered in European models.
Rear occupants also benefit from tinted windows and ambient lighting which should make the interior a nicer place to be.
While only one grade is available, buyers can take their T-Roc R even further with the ‘Black Style Package’ which dresses the exterior in contrasting trim for an additional $1200 or add Lapiz Blue inlay inside the cabin for $250.
Buyers can also add a panoramic sunroof for $2000 and upgrade to a seven-speaker Beats premium audio system for an additional $750.
A full list of inclusions will be announced closer to the T-Roc R’s launch in August 2022.
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
