Volkswagen takes aim at mid-size heavyweights with new value-packed Tiguan range

Volkswagen has announced Australian pricing for the third-generation 2025 Tiguan.

The mid-size SUV is arriving in Australia soon with a revised platform, revamped engine line-up, and new cabin technology.

The new entry-level Tiguan 110TSI Life takes a $1000 hike upmarket, now costing $44,990, before on-road costs.

Volkswagen is also offering more choice with punchier powertrains up top, culminating in the flagship 195TSI R-Line for $70,490 (MRLP), though the R is gone for now.

One conspicuous absence from the Australian Tiguan line-up is a hybrid offering, something key rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson offer. A plug-in hybrid is sold overseas (and will power other VW Group models here) but is not coming to Oz initially.

The new Tiguan range benefits from the upgraded MQB Evo platform, supporting new adaptive dampers (where optioned) and upgraded cabin technology with space for up to a 15-inch central touchscreen.

The Tiguan has grown 30mm in length (4539mm) but rides on an identical 2680mm wheelbase. The extra body length means 37L more boot space, so 652 (to the seat tops) which is seriously impressive given the still-compact exterior size.

The Tiguan range starts with the 110kW/250Nm 110TSI Life, powered by a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder that drives the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Pricing is up $1000 from the old car but, aside from the new metal, you get more equipment.

Bonuses over the old Life include 19-inch alloy wheels, bigger 12.9-inch multimedia touchscreen with navigation and DAB radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power tailgate, and surround-view camera.

Standard safety equipment grows as well with adaptive cruise control with stop and go, auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, AEB junction, rear cross-traffic alert, nine airbags, and speed limit assist.

The 110TSI engine can be paired to Elegance trim, bringing auto-highbeam LED headlights, illuminated grille, chrome exterior trim, rear privacy glass high-grade seats with leather upholstery, heating, ventilation and massage function.

That’s rather a lot of equipment for $50,690, before on-road costs. You can up the punch in Elegance guise with the 150TSI, bringing a 150kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo driving all-four wheels through a seven-speed automatic. The 0-100km/h sprint is 7.1 seconds

The Tiguan 150TSI Elegance gets the Sound & Vision package (HUD, Harman Kardon sound, $2700) thrown in along with Matrix LED headlights, scrolling rear indicators, progressive steering. larger 15-inch touchscreen and adaptive dampers (DCC Pro).

Largely matching the Elegance (save for the smaller touchscreen), the 150TSI R-Line has a sporty bodykit, special 19-inch alloys, and cloth-appointed sports seats for $55,990 (MRLP).

Volkswagen notes the 150TSI R-Line is $4600 cheaper than the outgoing 162TSI R-Line — the most popular trim — though it’s worth noting the new mid-spec model is three tenths slower to 100km/h

That’s where the new 196TSI R-Line headliner steps in for $70,490, before on-road costs. Grunt is lifted to a Golf GTI-matching 195kW and 400Nm, bringing the 0-100km/h sprint down to 5.9 seconds.

Extra goodies include 20-inch ‘Leeds’ alloy wheels, leather upholstery, comfort sports seat with memory, heating, ventilation and massage, a heated steering wheel, head-up display and Harman Kardon sound system.

You can go one step further with the Black Style package ($1500) with mirror caps, roof rails, window trim strips and 20-inch ‘York’ alloy wheels all finished in black.
